Background

The University of Birmingham is offering the role of Anatomy Demonstrator(s) to suitably qualified individuals wishing to develop their skills in teaching anatomy as a basis for further career development. Their main responsibility will be to teach anatomy by means of small group teaching sessions and demonstration of prosected cadaveric material. Anatomy demonstrators are part of the anatomy teaching delivery team for undergraduate and postgraduate Medical Dental Pharmacy Nursing Physician Associate and Biomedical Sciences students in modularised programmes of the College of Medicine and Health.

Role Summary

The Human Anatomy Unit in the Department of Biomedical Sciences; School of Infection Inflammation and Immunology; College of Medicine and Health is responsible for teaching topographical anatomy histology embryology and neuroanatomy to students in most programmes of the College and beyond. We also provide teaching on prosected material for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Physiotherapy and those taking the MSc in Advanced Clinical addition we are responsible for the intercalated BSc in Clinical Anatomy for MBChB students.

The post holder will provide innovative engaging sessions for a wide variety of students in several different learning environments (e.g. prosection sessions small group teaching interactive lectures flipped classroom sessions dissection Anatomage ultrasound). They will also be involved in all other aspects of learning and teaching which may include for example setting and marking of assessments and examinations; creating updating and refreshing learning materials including technology enhanced resources; and creating anatomical prosections. Broader involvement in areas such as educational research committees outreach and recruitment may also be expected commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.

Main Duties

  • To teach anatomy to a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in different learning environments including small group learning Anatomage sessions interactive lectures prosection and/or dissection sessions etc.
  • To supervise class activities within a framework designed by others.
  • To support students acquisition of knowledge using technology enhanced learning.
  • To introduce students to use of ultrasound equipment.
  • To record attendance and monitor progress of students.
  • To assist students as required offering advice on learning problems and directing them to Student Services if additional support is needed.
  • To ensure that students adhere to the rules and regulations for working in an area licensed by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA).
  • To ensure that students adhere to professional codes of conduct and University Health and Safety policies whilst in the HTA licensed areas.
  • To contribute towards creating prosected material suitable for teaching as required.
  • To input towards the development of learning resources in anatomy as required.
  • To contribute to all forms of assessments and examinations papers including for example invigilating marking applying assessment criteria undertaking oral examinations and moderating papers and scripts as directed.
  • To assist the Head of Anatomy and professional services staff in all activities related to the instruction of anatomy and to compliance with anatomical legislation as directed.
  • To assist in management and organisation of anatomical collections.
  • To provide collegiate support to all other staff engaged in teaching and learning.
  • To engage continually with personal professional development including for example updating subject knowledge developing teaching expertise and creating new teaching resources as required.
  • To carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of teaching.
  • To engage in scholarship activities.
  • To become involved in broader activities such as university outreach public engagement recruitment active committee membership commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.
  • To contribute enthusiastically and positively to the strategic objectives of the Unit School Institute College and University.
  • To perform any other relevant duties as assigned.

Person Specification

Applicants are expected to address each of the requirements specifically.

Essential Knowledge Skills And Experience

  • Medical or dental degree and/or degree in anatomy or related subject at MSc or equivalent level.
  • Detailed understanding and knowledge of human anatomy (embryology gross anatomy histology neuroanatomy).
  • Experience of working with human cadaveric material.
  • Understanding of legal and ethical implications of working in HTA-licensed facilities.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to deliver teaching across programmes providing support and encouragement to students learning anatomy.
  • Ability to engage interest and enthusiasm in undergraduate students.
  • Ability to assess information as well as communicate and work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and with a positive attitude in teams.
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully prioritising and meeting deadlines.
  • Flexibility with a willingness to work extra hours as required during busy periods including outside normal working hours.
  • Knowledge and experience of self-reflection adapting in response to feedback and experience.
  • Competence in digital technologies.
  • Willingness and/or demonstrated ability to contribute enthusiastically to the work of an active Unit.
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010 and how actively to ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.

Desirable Knowledge Skills And Experience

  • Experience of delivering anatomy teaching including online.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student learning experience.
  • Familiarity with modern technology enhanced education (e.g. VR/AR/MR) with interest in furthering knowledge of digital technologies to develop their use in teaching and learning.
  • Membership of Anatomical Society British Association of Clinical Anatomists or equivalent learned society.
  • Teaching qualification Associateship or Fellowship of AdvanceHE.
  • Ability to work proactively with colleagues in other areas contributing specialist knowledge.
  • Scholarship or research experience.
