Grade: 2

Part-time casual hourly paid work.

Closing Date: 19th October 2025.

This role is open to all part-time University staff members and external candidates only.

We do not allow students to apply for this job including those pursuing a bachelors or masters degree.

Role Summary

The Timetabling and Examinations Office at the University of Birmingham is seeking to recruit non-student Supporting Invigilators to assist in the invigilation of exams during the Universitys centrally managed examination periods for the 2025-2026 academic year.

We are recruiting invigilators primarily for the Universitys central managed exams

January (12th Jan- 17th Jan 2026 )

Main summer (11th May 6th June 2026 )

Supplementary (17thAug 28th Aug 2026)

This excluding weekends and UK public holidays.

You will need to be available for at least Five (5) full working days during the January examination period and fourteen (14) full working days for the main summer examination period allocation of shifts will be based on availability.

Main Duties

All Supporting Invigilators are responsible for facilitating the smooth running of examinations and ensuring the integrity of the examination process. Supporting Invigilators are responsible to the Senior Invigilator.

  • Working as part of a team to prepare the examination venue to ensure that all examinations start promptly. This will include laying out examination attendance slips answer books question papers and any other necessary materials according to a seating plan.
  • Working as part of a team to invigilate the exam. This will include the checking and reconciliation of attendance slips conducting random checks of student ID accompanying students to the toilet and handing out any additional examination materials that are needed. This may also include dealing with any examination incidents or irregularities that arise completing the relevant paperwork and answering subsequent queries.
  • Working as part of a team to collate examination answer booklets and other materials at the end of the exam in a timely accurate and efficient way.
  • Patrolling the exam venue to support students and remaining vigilant for any irregularities.

Person Specification

  • Previous experience working in an educational setting.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work independently and use sound judgment to seek advice when appropriate.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure.
  • Ability to handle challenging situations in a sensitive yet firm manner.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • High level of reliability and punctuality.
  • Confident in the use of English with the ability to interact effectively with students and senior invigilators.
  • Physically able to stand/walk for extended periods (up to 3 continuous hours in some venues)

It is mandatory for all supporting invigilators to completetraining sessions prior to the Universitys January and main summer examination periods. Training sessions will be emailed over.
