Water Maintenance Worker II

The Monterey County Water Resources Agency (MCWRA) is an independent special purpose public agency staffed with dedicated employees and focused on water resources management in Monterey County. The mission of the Agency is to manage water resources sustainably while minimizing impacts from flooding for present and future generations. The Agency was created via a California Water Code Appendix in a statute known as the Monterey County Water Resources Agency Act. The Agency provides the following services: Control of flood and storm waters in the County water conservation protection of water quality reclamation of water and the exchange of water. Fundamental to the Agencys mission to sustainably manage water resources while minimizing impacts from flooding the MCWRA owns and operates the Nacimiento and San Antonio reservoirs and dams a recycled water irrigation distribution system and numerous other facilities.


The Agency is seeking a collaborative and hardworking individual to fill one (1) Water Maintenance Worker II position. This is a full-time position with an excellent benefits package. The primary work locations of this position are the Nacimiento and San Antonio reservoirs and dams. The incumbent will be required to report for duty within 30-minutes of notification of call to emergency/disaster duty.


The ideal candidate will have a background in repair and maintenance of various water resource-related facilities such as reservoirs ponds pipelines valves pump stations groundwater wells culverts and earthen dams channels and levees. The ideal candidate will demonstrate integrity; flexibility and adaptability; be able to navigate complex situations with professionalism and poise; and be organized to complete multiple tasks concurrently. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working outdoors doing field work.


This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the any higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority.


The Eligible List established by this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time part-time or temporary basis.

Examples of Duties

  • Utilizes craft skills such as electrical welding sandblasting painting cement finishing and carpentry in the maintenance of pumps valves dam structures gates drainage structures guardrails retaining walls pipes elbows levees fences etc.
  • Operates light to medium sized maintenance equipment such as backhoes dozers and loaders.
  • Stores mixes applies herbicides and performs other unskilled tasks when the nature of the work does not call for the continual operation of assigned equipment or use of craft skills.
  • Operates a variety of small hand and power tools.
  • Flags traffic sets up barricades.
  • Performs operators maintenance and service on tools and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge skills and abilities:

Working Knowledge of:
  • Methods tools and techniques used in carpentry painting sandblasting welding cement finishing and electrical work.
  • Methods used in operating trucks backhoes loaders and dozers.


Some Knowledge of:

  • The California Vehicle Code with respect to the operation of assigned equipment on highways.
  • Basic math sufficient to keep timecards and keep service records and to take measurements.


Skill and Ability to:

  • Skillfully and safely operate small hand and power tools.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Read and write English at a level sufficient to follow oral and written instructions and to complete basic time and equipment records.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Examples of Experience/Education/Training

Any combination of training education and/or experience which provides the knowledge skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:


Experience: Approximately two years of experience performing duties equivalent to a Water Maintenance Worker I in the County of Monterey.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The required conditions of employment include but are not limited to the following:

  • Possess a valid California Class A driver license at the time of appointment and possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule including evenings weekends holidays and during times of disaster and/or emergency; travel out of County to attend meetings.
  • Incumbents are required to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification of call to emergency/disaster duty.
  • Work under adverse conditions such as inclement weather dust or silica dust heat or steam wind or environments subject to sudden changes and/or extremes in air temperature pressure or humidity work outdoors on uneven and/or slippery and/or wet ground surfaces at elevations above ground level in confined or extremely small work spaces come into contact with water petroleum products lubricants cleaning solutions or solvents toxic fumes liquids or gases allergens chemical products requiring MSDS sheets plant animal or food material or waste around moving machinery vehicles equipment hand and/or power tools electricity vibration and in extremely noisy environments.
  • Wear and use safety clothing and equipment as required (i.e. safety glasses gloves etc.).
  • Demonstrate the ability to swim safety for approximately 50 yards in order to safely work on and around large bodies of water (i.e. rivers lakes dam etc.).
