uOttawas facilities encompass three main sites that are comprised of over 600000 square meters of building space (over 6.4 million square feet) 42.5 hectares of grounds 125 buildings and 4500 beds in 11 residences. There are over 150 employees in Facilities including Project Managers Energy and Commissioning Specialists Mechanical and Electrical Engineers Architects and space Planners. The facilities capital and operating expenditures are in the range of $100M for the Universitys $2.0 billion assets under management. The 20-year Capital spending plan envisions $4.0 billion of new investment highlighted by uOttawa launch of project Top Shelf a $300 million capital investment to build a new facility for the Faculty of Health Sciences at uOttawas River Campus as well as a tower at the Roger Guidon campus to house uOttawas new Advanced Medical Research Center (AMRC).

Position purpose
Under the direction of the unit lead architectural trades and the supervision of the locksmith team lead maintains installs repairs and modifies different types of door furniture and vault locks located in University buildings to ensure their proper operation. Ensures that all University facilities are reliable properly maintained and running smoothly at all times.

In this role your responsibilities will include:

  • Performs assigned tasks according to the work plan relying on own experience and skills to complete them safely and effectively.
  • Documents progress of work in a computerized maintenance system.
  • Fulfils communication responsibilities by providing explanations and clarifications including on delays or problems encountered before or during work. Identifies and suggests additional work needed to meet performance standards along with the prior approvals required.
  • Provides technical assistance required by the section maintenance planner supervisor and employees helping them with work planning co-ordination and execution.
  • Helps to set up and update the equipment maintenance program. Helps identify opportunities for improvement and implements them.
  • Shares and promotes best practices for maintenance and reliability helps to make technological decisions and assesses their impact.
  • Helps keep inventory up to date.
  • Handles daily responsibilities of the team lead when required to cover absences.


What you will bring:

  • High school diploma
  • Knowledge of locksmithing normally acquired through a locksmith certification program or equivalent experience
  • At least five (5) years relevant experience in installing commercial locking systems and in performing related maintenance
  • Knowledge of software used to manage keys
  • Knowledge and experience related to reading and interpreting technical drawings
  • Knowledge of low-voltage wiring (an asset)
  • Experience in using Microsoft 365 products; experience in using maintenance management software such as Archibus (an asset)
  • Knowledge and experience related to applying relevant municipal provincial and federal codes including the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and any other applicable legislation or regulations
  • Ability to think critically work independently and make sound decisions
  • Good judgment initiative and resourcefulness
  • Ability to meet strict timelines
  • Good manual dexterity
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and client service skills
  • Bilingualism French and English (spoken and written)

This policy was suspended effective May 1 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
