Job Summary

Job Description

The Law Department is seeking applicants for an Assistant Corporation Counsel position in its Appeals Division. The Appeals Division handles appeals originating from nearly all of the Law Departments litigating divisions and prepares amicus briefs in cases implicating the Citys interests. Our attorneys appear before federal and state appellate courts and are responsible for briefing and arguing appeals in an array of cases from routine litigation arising out of the governance of a municipality with more than eight million residents to complex appeals involving cutting-edge legal questions and critical public policy issues. The breadth and depth of our docket affords our attorneys a unique perspective on how the City works and an opportunity to engage in top-notch appellate practice and contribute to legal developments impacting the City while learning about City government and new areas of the law. Working independently and collaboratively with supervisors trial attorneys client agencies and executive staff you will brief and argue a significant number of appeals every year.

After the completion of orientation attorneys hired by the Law Department will have the opportunity to elect to work from home under one of the following two programs. The first option allows attorneys to work remotely on a limited and irregular basis. The second option is a Citywide pilot program which allows participants to select two set days to work from home each week. The two days will need to be approved by the attorneys division and take into consideration the needs of the division as the pilot program requires more than 50% staff coverage each addition if an attorney needs to appear in person on a set work from home day they will need to attend to those in-person responsibilities and will not be able to work from home that day. Participants in the pilot program must set one work from home location where they will work remotely. This pilot program is currently being tested Citywide to determine its efficacy for City agencies and is not yet a permanent program.
