GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides security for the school district staff students buildings and property through patrol of school building(s) and building perimeters including parking lots to prevent unauthorized visitors or property damage and to provide for general building security; does related work as required. Under general supervision are responsible for maintaining over-all security for all occupants and property of the assigned school district buildings parking lots and sites in accordance with established security procedures. This classification is unarmed and does not have the power to arrest individuals for security breaches.
HOURS ON DUTY
11:00 PM- 7:00 AM
Tuesday Night Shift - Sunday Morning Shift
ESSENTIAL TASKS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude other duties if the work is similar related or a logical assignment for this position. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the job management reserves the right to revise the job description. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Performs security patrols of designated areas on foot or in vehicle.
- Performs Building Checks to identify any problems inside the building (ruptured pipes roof leaks power problem etc)
- Watches for irregular or unusual conditions that may create security concerns or safety hazards.
- Notifies police or fire department in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
- Assists police and/or fire department for building access.
- Warns violators of rule infractions such as loitering smoking or carrying forbidden articles.
- Permits authorized persons to enter property and monitors entrances and exits.
- Observes departing personnel to protect against theft of company property and ensure that authorized removal of property is conducted within appropriate client requirements.
- Investigates and prepare reports on accidents incidents and suspicious activities.
- Provides assistance to customers employees and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
- Substitutes for Central Station as needed.
- Performs all duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Board policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of and the ability to apply standard security procedures and best practices.
- Knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal state and local laws rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of the current trends and developments in the field of security.
- Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-driven word processing spreadsheet and file maintenance programs.
- Ability to read coherently and write legibly.
- Skills in effectively communicating ones self to school officials through speech or writing.
- Skills in establishing effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum: High School Diploma (or equivalency) with some experience or training in a security related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge skills and abilities. Must possess knowledge of and the ability to apply standard security procedures and best practices. Must possess the ability to acquires knowledge of School Board policies and procedures and Student Rights and Responsibilities. Security experience in aa public-school setting preferred. Must possess the ability to read write speak and understand standard English Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft Office programs. Completion of college-level courses in the area of security psychology emergency management or criminal justice preferred. Must possess excellent human relations skill. Must possess a valid Virginia drivers license with positive DMV points.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must have the ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone key a two-way radio microphone operate a keyboard and use a lock and key; hear and understand speech at normal levels; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; articulate information in an emergency situation; use physical agility and strength to defend self and detain persons using force if necessary; and have the visual acuity necessary to observe and comprehend student movement. This work could occasionally require the ability to exert up to 40 pounds of force to move objects.
Most of the on-site school security personnel come from backgrounds in law enforcement school resource officer programs or the D.A.R.E. Officers and School Resource Officers with the annual D.A.R.E. Camp that is sponsored by the Roanoke City Police Department and Roanoke City Public Schools.
WORK ENVIRONNMENT
Work is performed in a variety of settings including an office setting and in the field at various schools and project sites. Some exposure to outdoor conditions all weather conditions and hazardous work environments.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of an appropriate drivers license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and good driving record.
ONGOING TRAINING
The school division personnel believe it is very beneficial for the Roanoke City Public Schools Security staff to participate in training along with membersof the School Resource Officers D.A.R.E. Officers and the administrative could include but not be limited totraining involving first responder bullying prevention and school violence prevention.
