Vision Point Systems is seeking a junior metallurgist with 0-2 years of experience in performing metallurgical studies in a laboratory environment. This position will primarily support the Physical Metallurgy branch at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division and concentrateon investigations of Naval structural alloy systemssuch as high-strength steelaluminum nickel aluminum bronze and/or titanium alloys. Highly qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate fundamental understanding of physical metallurgy conventional alloy processing techniques mechanical properties and failure analyses.
Primary Responsibilities
- Junior level position with ability to learn basic metallography sample preparation skills to assist customers with metallurgic investigations. Metallographic preparation processes include cutting grinding polishing and etching.
- Operating testing equipment for metallurgical studies e.g. hardness dilatometry calorimetry and chemical analysis.
- Conduct heat treatment studies of laboratory-scale samples.
- Documentation of findings in technical reports memos and/or briefs.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment used in a metallographic prep lab.
Requirements- 0-2 years of experience in a metallurgical lab environment.
- Minimum Bachelors degree in metallurgy materials science/engineering or similar is required.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of metallurgical principles to assist with research and/or failure investigations.
- Ability to travel.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security Citizenship required.
- Must be able to communicate at a high level in both written and verbal formats.
Desired skills:
- Hands-on experience in a metallographic lab (sample prep polishing etching).
- Basic familiarity and understanding of statistical terms regarding accuracy and precision.
- Hands-on experience with light optical microscopy and interpretation of microstructure.
- Hands-on experience using a SEM.
