Job Description Summary:

The Construction Projects Technician I - Painter performs skilled painting work in the preparation patching finishing and maintaining of all building structures walls woodwork furniture and equipment by inspecting the work site to determine the materials equipment tools and method to be used; follow a plan layout sketch or schematic for the project or an established color scheme; mix and match pigments stains or varnishes to the required color tint and/or texture; assemble or build and install scaffolding materials and equipment as required by the scope of work; and use paint brushes rollers and/or sprayers sandpaper sanders steel wool wire brushes and related painting tools.

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Complete assigned painting projects with quality workmanship by preparing surfaces for painting using sandpaper power sanders steel wool wire brushes scrappers paint removers and chemicals filling nail holes cracks or joints with putty plaster or other fillers apply paints stains varnishes enamel or lacquer using paint brushes rollers and/or sprayers and recommend the use of additional departmental personnel or contract personnel (as appropriate) to meet assigned completion targets.

  • Protect University property and equipment from damage during painting work by removing furniture wall fixtures and equipment from work sites if possible or covering immoveable items with protective cloths cover floors with cloths or tarpaulins tape woodwork facings and decorative trims and erect safe scaffolding in a manner that prevents damage.

  • Restore painting work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing scaffolding painting cloths tarpaulins and masking tape used during the project return furniture and equipment to their proper location set up equipment that had been dismantled and clean any paint splatters from surfaces furniture or equipment.

  • Assist with documenting the cost of painting work by keeping accurate daily timesheets and work order records of time and materials to be charged to each job.

  • Provide periodic status reports on work projects material consumed and man-hours utilized.

  • Practice preventive maintenance of painting tools and equipment by performing spot checks of equipment to determine their working condition oil moving parts clean and service tools and equipment as directed or specified in the operators manual and returning damaged tools and equipment for repair or replacement.

  • Provide technical assistance in the purchase of new or replacement paint shop tools and equipment by being knowledgeable of the capabilities of various types of equipment and recommending the purchase of painting tools and equipment that meet the needs of the paint shop.

  • Reduce the likelihood of liability regarding the Universitys compliance with federal regulations by compliance with policies laws and regulations governing environmental protection safety hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to painting.

  • Contribute to an accident-free work environment by complying with operators instructions for the use of power sprayers and tools wearing protective equipment such as filter respirators goggles hearing protectors back supports and work gloves reporting incidents of unsafe work activity to supervisors and following standard safety precautions during work.

Required Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Work Experience:

  • Four (4) years of experience as a professional painter.

  • Experience using small hand and power tools precision measuring devices mechanical equipment and materials common to the painting trade and associated with the preparation of surfaces and painting.

  • Experience interpreting blueprints color schemes sketches or schematics.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Completion of a painting apprenticeship program.

Work Experience:

  • Experience installing wall coverings.

  • Experience working in higher education facilities.

  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to education experience and training qualifications relative to the requirements of the position and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
