Role Overview
Are you an accounting leader ready to strengthen the backbone of a mission-driven nonprofit Hillel International the largest Jewish campus organization in the world is seeking a Vice President Accounting and Finance to elevate its financial integrity controls and reporting while supporting smart mission-aligned decision-making.
Reporting to and partnering with the CFO the Vice President Accounting and Finance is the organizations lead for accounting operations financial reporting internal controls audit compliance and treasury. You will oversee the monthly close consolidation technical accounting grants and restricted funds and tax filings while modernizing processes and systems. Youll manage a finance team of 34 direct reports and steward a complex multi-million-dollar operating budget with diversified funding streams. This is a hybrid role based in Washington DC.
What Youll Do
- Lead the accounting function end to end: monthly close consolidations reconciliations and financial statement preparation in accordance with US GAAP for nonprofits.
- Own internal controls and policy: design document and maintain effective controls over financial reporting cash payables payroll and purchasing.
- Direct annual external audits and any donor or compliance audits; manage auditor relationships and deliver timely PBCs and audit responses.
- Oversee restricted funds grant accounting and revenue recognition including pledges contributions memberships events and sponsorships.
- Manage treasury cash forecasting and liquidity; optimize banking credit cards expense management and investment operations in coordination with the CFO.
- Strengthen accounting systems and data quality drive improvements in NetSuite integrations with Salesforce and reporting automation.
- Produce accurate timely financials and dashboards present results variances and insights to senior leadership the Board and key stakeholders.
- Partner with the CFO on budgeting forecasting scenario planning and organization-wide financial stewardship.
- Build mentor and develop a high-performing team with clear roles career paths and service-oriented support for departments and campus partners.
What Youll Need to Succeed (Requirements)
- 15 years of progressive accounting and finance leadership including nonprofit experience.
- CPA required.Big Four or national firm audit background is a plus.
- Deep knowledge of US GAAP for nonprofits including revenue recognition for contributions and grants endowment accounting and fund restrictions.
- Hands-on experience leading audits monthly closes consolidations and internal controls in complex multi-entity environments.
- Systems proficiency: NetSuite (or similar ERP); experience with Salesforce integrations and modern expense/credit card platforms (e.g. Ramp).
- Clear concise communicator with Board-facing experience and the ability to translate technical accounting into actionable insights.
- Proven track record building teams upgrading processes and implementing scalable policies and systems.
