Job Description
Schedule:
Monday two classes in a row from 10:30-11:45am and from 12:00-1:15pm
Wednesday two classes in a row from 10:30-11:45am and from 12:00-1:15pm
Thursday two classes in a row from 3:10-4:25pm and 4:35-6:05pm
Friday one class from 1:30-3:00pm
This is a temporary position starting October 27 ending December 9.
Position Summary
The Accompanist will provide live piano music for ballet pointe and modern classes for the Dance Department. The Accompanist will play a key role in the artistic and education mission of the department while representing Vassar College in a professional and collegial manner.
Responsibilities
Accompany weekly studio classes such as ballet pointe and modern with a thorough knowledge of the specialized music skills needed to accompany such classes.
Regular practice to maintain and improve pianistic skills.
Required knowledge skills and abilities
Documented experience as an accompanist and/or performer with two or more years of experience
Experience in accompanying dance classes
Advanced piano playing inclusive of sight reading and a broad knowledge of musical styles
Ability to choose appropriate music as instructor sets exercise during class and to respond immediately when asked to find an alternative choice of music
Thorough knowledge of piano repertoire
Ability to improvise in classical or contemporary styles appropriate to the classes being taught
Knowledge of terminology relating to ballet and modern dance.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with choreographers students faculty and staff.
Ability to clearly communicate orally and in writing and to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
Ability to interact socially with others.
Compensation
The compensation for this position is $30-40 hourly.
