Job Description

We are now looking for master students within mechanical engineering that are interested in doing their thesis project at our Advanced CAE - Fluid Mechanics Department at Husqvarna Group!

Husqvarna has a long-standing tradition of developing high-performance two-stroke internal combustion engines for handheld products such as chainsaws and trimmers where power-to-weight ratio and emissions performance are critical success factors.

To meet increasingly demanding performance and emissions targets in-cylinder CFD simulations are used to analyze and optimize the gas-exchange processthe replacement of residual gases with fresh charge. While this methodology provides deep insight into flow dynamics it is often computationally expensive making it less suitable for automated design exploration.

Some parts of the thesis work can be done remotely but the majority of the simulation work is done at our premises in Huskvarna.

The objective
Develop a simplified gas-exchange STAR-CCM CFD simulation model suitable for design optimization.

  • Investigate possible approaches for simplification of a full-scale gas-exchange simulation to reduce computational cost.
  • Implement and evaluate the chosen approach.

Proper area of education

Master in mechanical engineering or similar preferably with focus on fluid dynamics.

The thesis will include work such as

  • Research two-stroke engine technology with focus on the gas-exchange process.
  • Analyze the current in-cylinder CFD simulation methodology.
  • Identify simplification opportunities and assess their impact on accuracy.
  • Develop a simulation model with reduced computational cost.
  • Perform design optimization to evaluate the simulation performance.
  • Validate the results against full-scale CFD simulations.

This project offers a unique opportunity to work with advanced simulation tools and contribute to the development of next-generation engine technologies. If youre passionate about fluid dynamics simulation and real-world engineering challengeswed love to hear from you!

How to apply
Please send in your application with CV and cover letter no later than November 24th. Due to GDPR we do not accept applications by email.

Start date of the thesis project is in the beginning of 2026.
