    JOB DESCRIPTION
    Summary/Objective:
    The Library/Media Assistant assists in providing a well-organized smooth functioning library information center that supports students as they strive to effectively use information to become productive citizens and lifelong learners. May work together with the classroom teachers in order to provide a well-organized smoothly functioning class environment in computer lab. May assist students with software and provide lab skill lessons.

    Essential Functions:
    • Circulates library information center books media and other material to all students staff and parents. Communicates with library information center users regarding status of their circulation records: provides circulation reports class reports overdue notices and parent letters. Keeps patron records current. Maintains and updates patron records.
    • Manages maintains and troubleshoots the library automation cataloging and circulation software.
    • Processes new materials for the library information center and textbook collections: prepares materials for circulation creates automated catalog records using a variety of cataloging sources including but not limited to a CD ROM containing bibliographic records and other existing catalog records.
    • On a daily basis works and communicates effectively with the entire school population (students teachers administrators parents grandparents residents volunteers UNC or Aims students individuals who live in neighborhoods around school).
    • Works with individual students or small groups of students using the library and available computers. May present Read Alouds library skills lessons and computer lab lessons to classes from 1st through 5th grade in the Specials Rotation as well as supervising computer lab time for Kindergarten in the Specials Rotation (Specials Rotation includes P.E. Art Music & Library). Supervises student behavior in the library throughout the day. Supervises Leadership Program students as well as student or adult volunteers.
    • Assists staff and students with the operation of technology hardware including but not limited to: computers laser disc players scanners video cameras VCRs laminators CD ROM drives digital cameras printers fax machines copiers Alpha Smarts unsophisticated video distribution systems.
    • Oversees the general appearance of library including daily seasonal and special event displays of books and bulletin boards.
    • Assists with inventory of library materials and prepares lists of missing books and books to be discarded.
    • Shelves books media computer software and other materials. Makes routine repairs on damaged materials and prepares books for rebinding.
    • Provides necessary clerical support for the library.
    • Maintains current inventory of library-related supplies and prepares orders for items as needed.
    • May be responsible for Library in assigned building such as Authors Visit Battle of the Books Fall and Spring Scholastic Books Fairs.
    • May select and purchase new books technology etc. for library collection and computer lab.
    • May create lesson plans for library skills and computer lab skills for 1st 5th grades.
    • May request audiovisual materials or schedule equipment from the District Media Center as needed.
    • May assist with the setup of audio and video equipment as needed.
    • May manage interlibrary loan (ILL) services (requests and circulation of ILL materials from other libraries) to staff and students.
    • May participate in Duty Schedule once daily and Specials Duty rotation recess/lunchroom.
    • May be required to attend LAMP meetings and Building PD classes.
    • May be asked to be member of one committee and help supervise one student club (building expectation for all certified and classified.)
    • May circulate and maintain the building audiovisual equipment collection. Contact appropriate district personnel to repair audiovisual equipment as necessary. Offers individual instruction for use of audiovisual equipment for staff and students.
    • Recruits organizes and gives directions to volunteers and staff for daily library jobs book fairs author visits childrens literacy clubs special events and school wide activities.
    • May manage reading incentive programs (including but not limited to Book Buddies RAH RIF Accelerated Reader) as assigned.
    • May supervise the computer lab especially if it is located in or next to the library information center.
    • May process circulate and install computer software programs.
    • May provide assistance to substitute for library information specialist as necessary.
    • May assist with submitting orders for library information center materials by providing necessary clerical support or providing input for selection.
    • Performs other library information center-related duties as assigned.


    Additional Qualifications:
    Ability to communicate effectively and interact/deal tactfully with students parents volunteers faculty and administrators. Requires ability to perform multiple tasks effectively at the same time (i.e. helping students find information; pulling information for teachers; taking phone calls receiving instructions from principal and giving instructions for book audio visual or computer usage. Knowledge of basic library materials terminology and routines i.e. reference circulation etc. Knowledge of current technology as applicable to basic school library and clerical use. Adequate keyboarding skills. Ability to respond to urgent situations with flexibility and efficiency while maintaining courteous and professional relationship with staff students parents and public. Ability to use good emotional judgment and common sense. Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy. Bilingual (English/Spanish) helpful but not required in all schools. Ability to perform all functions of the position with an interest to learn.
