Job Description

Job Summary:

Under moderate supervision support the installation daily operation and ongoing maintenance of the Aquariums Interpretive Media infrastructure. Provide technical support for Public Programs throughout the Aquarium (which may include night and weekend support); Resolve and document technical issues as they arise and provide technical support to colleagues throughout the Aquarium while they are using Interpretive Medias AV infrastructure (within exhibitions the auditorium behind-the-scenes or the MEI supported conference rooms). Perform other duties as required.

The Audio-Visual (AV) Technician is an important member of the Interpretive Media team at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Multimedia Engineering and Integration department is responsible for the installation operation and maintenance of all visitor-facing AV systems at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Core Activities:

  • Troubleshoot installed interpretive media AV systems including but not limited to digital signage video displays digital interactives public address systems music playback webcams etc.
  • Respond to radio/phone calls for tech support for troubleshoot/repair.
  • Perform basic repairs for installed Interpretive Media AV systems.
  • Assist lead and senior AV technicians on more complex repairs.
  • Provide first level technical support (including live troubleshooting technical system equalizing audio playback etc.) for live daily performances within the auditorium at all feeding programs outdoor theater programs evening and special events.
  • Perform daily startup operations for all Interpretive Media AV systems throughout the Aquarium. Document and escalate unresolved issues to more senior technicians.
  • Set up and break down AV equipment (monitors projectors cameras microphones speakers etc.) for use during night weekend and live streaming events.
  • Assist in the installation and configuration of new and replacement Interpretive Media hardware (computers video players projectors monitors amplifiers mixers speakers microphones etc.).
  • Study and reference documentation/resources regarding how to troubleshoot and maintain IMs AV systems; contribute to this documentation as needed.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on all Interpretive Media AV systems (e.g. replacing batteries vacuuming dust from AV racks wiping down touchscreens etc.).
  • Move and organize AV equipment into/out of storage as required.

Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Associates degree in Audio Visual Technology or related field or equivalent combination of education training and experience
  • Experience operating maintaining and troubleshooting audio-visual systems
  • Good computer usage skills (MAC and PC) technical trouble-shooting skills and basic understanding of computer networking
  • Interest in mechanical fabrication elementary carpentry basic electronic repair and soldering
  • Ability and willingness to work night events and weekends as needed without direct supervision
  • Ability to operate (or willingness to learn) heavy machinery such as scissor lifts and forklifts
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • High emotional intelligence and able to work well within diverse teams
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic department
  • Ability to work within and maintain Monterey Bay Aquariums Core Values
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within the first 3 months of employment a valid California drivers license in order to operate Monterey Bay Aquarium vehicles

Physical Requirements to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Hourly Compensation Range:

$27.50-$31.73 USD per hour. Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skill/knowledge set.
