Job Summary: This is professional work ensuring that each Bethune-Cookman University (B CU) student has an opportunity to identify personal goals for recovery from a variety of mental health behavioral and/or academic problems. This professional-student relationship is based on trust respect safety and collaboration while recognizing the strengths the student brings to the treatment process. The counselor offers expertise based on the nature of a problem and provides services based on an established treatment plan. The mental health counselor provides mental health counseling and case management services to individuals couples and groups by assisting students with issues related to anxiety depression stress self-esteem behavioral concerns (anger) relationships substance use and family/parenting/marital concerns.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Reports directly to the Director of Behavioral and Resource Services.
- Collaborates with the Student Health Services Nurse Practitioner (ARNP)
- Provides university wide orientation services describing the general nature of and services provided by the behavioral health department.
- Coordinates campus wide programming in accordance with B-CU institutional goals and objectives. Follows Behavioral Health Policy and Procedures.
- Completes intake orientations and assessment as required for the development of treatment plans.
- Provides mental health counseling to students (individuals/couples/groups) to assist with adjustment to university life through exploration of problems alternative solutions and decisions.
- Promotes help seeking behaviors within the student body to dispel myths associated with mental health counseling.
- Helps students identify reduce and/or remove factors that impede success in academic vocational emotional psychological and personal growth.
- Accurately maintains records using the approved electronic health record (MEDICAT) and documents all contacts made with students including intake assessments treatment plans written reports progress notes or any other student related data.
- Conducts surveys and assessments to gather information from participants to make decisions that are data driven and reflects best practices.
- Provides suicide/crisis interventions by responding to student needs during acute emotional or psychological distress.
- Follows all institutional local state and national laws concerning confidentiality including FERPA and HIPAA guidelines while providing support to faculty staff and parents as appropriate during times of crises.
- Provides case management services by partnering with Resource Services and other internal and external departments and agencies toward the achievement of established student goals.
- Makes referrals by matching student needs and/or problems to appropriate community resources.
- Develops effective communication tools to educate parents students staff and faculty about available internal and external community services and resources
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Behavioral Health and Resource Services.

Education and Experience:
- Doctorate/Masters degree in Counseling/Psychology/Marriage and Family/Clinical Social Work
- Licensed Mental Health Counselor/Licensed Clinical Social Worker/ Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist/Psychologist
- Three (3) years of experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse student population
- Self-starter who can work in a fast paced dynamic team oriented and culturally diverse environment.
- Must be available evenings and weekends as needed.
Physical requirements:
- Ability to lift at least 25lbs
- Ability to bend stoop and walk.
- Able to push pull and reach overhead
