Title: Plant Pathologist
Description:As a Plant Pathologist at Bell Nursery you will play a critical role in safeguarding the health of our extensive inventory of trees shrubs and perennials. You will diagnose plant diseases develop prevention strategies and collaborate with our production and research teams to ensure disease-free propagation and distribution. This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where your expertise will directly impact our operations and contribute to sustainable horticulture practices.
Responsibilities: The Plant Pathologist will be responsible for conducting regular inspections of nursery stock (trees shrubs and perennials) to identify and diagnose fungal bacterial viral and other plant diseases. They will analyze soil water and plant tissue samples using laboratory techniques to detect pathogens and recommend appropriate treatments. The Plant Pathologist will develop and implement integrated pest management (IPM) programs tailored to our diverse plant species. They will collaborate with growers sales and leadership teams to advise on disease prevention quarantine protocols and best practices for plant care. The Plant Pathologist will research emerging plant health threats specific to trees (e.g. oaks maples) shrubs (e.g. hydrangeas roses) and perennials (e.g. hostas daylilies) and propose innovative solutions. They will maintain detailed records of disease incidents treatments and outcomes to support regulatory compliance and continuous improvement. The Plant Pathologist will also maintain detailed records of chemical applications in compliance with NJDEP requirements. They will train nursery staff on early detection of diseases and safe handling of affected plants. Finally the Plant Pathologist will stay current with industry trends attend conferences and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Requirements:
Bachelors degree in Plant Pathology Horticulture Entomology Botany or a related field.
3 years of experience in plant pathology or IPM preferred. Nursery agricultural or greenhouse setting a plus.
Willing to receive NJ Private Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months of hire
Strong knowledge of plant diseases affecting trees shrubs and perennials including common pathogens like Phytophthora powdery mildew and root rot.
Familiarity with IPM principles and sustainable agriculture practices.
Excellent analytical problem-solving and communication skills with the ability to convey technical information to non-experts.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team with occasional fieldwork in varying weather conditions.
Valid drivers license and willingness to travel as needed.
