Job Description

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Transportation Training Specialist organizes safety training in accordance with state and federal regulations for new and existing Transportation employees and coordinates/oversees bus driver/bus assistant training to ensure the District conforms to federal state and city regulations while providing a safe environment for students and staff. Responds to emergency situations as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES including the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Coordinates training for all new employees to the transportation department primarily bus drivers and bus assistants.

Leads periodic review of safety training and department procedures for bus drivers and bus assistants and maintains documents per state and federal regulations for these activities.

Coordinates safety training meetings for all employees on a bi-weekly schedule that emphasizes how to safely operate a bus interact with students and staff and maintain personal safety while performing daily job duties.

Coordinates and oversees the annual school district safety training modules for the transportation department.

Tracks all vehicle accidents and all personal injury accidents in the Transportation Department.

Investigates each vehicle accident in person at the scene of the accident. Gathers information of all persons involved in said accident and ensures that the proper authorities have been contacted including the police department fire department and/or ambulance.

Coordinates follow up safety training after a bus driver or bus assistant has an accident.

Conducts monthly Transportation Toolbox meetings.

Assists in bi-annual bus inspection by the State of Iowa.

Ensures that all bus drivers are current on their CDLs DOT medical certificates and Iowa Department of Education training.

Coordinates annual safety and procedural training at the beginning of the school year for all employees.

Drives a school bus route in times of critical need.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill education and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Must possess at least three years of experience as a bus driver and/or a trainer of bus drivers or any combination of education and experience that would provide the necessary leadership knowledge and/or management skills. Must have a thorough understanding of school based transportation procedures/concepts and their applications. Must possess demonstrated leadership organizational human relations and communications skills. Must possess a valid Iowa Commercial Drivers License with a school bus and passenger endorsement and maintain a good driving record. Must possess a current and valid DOT medical certificate.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical to the success of this position. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals and groups from all levels of the organization including departmental staff principals and central administration as well as students parents and community members. Communication will include individual to large group presentations as well as written communications and reports. Individual must have effective listening skills.

ANALYTICAL and REASONING SKILLS

Individual must have a solid background in assessment and have the ability to interpret data which may be very complex and varied. Must be able to apply assessment strategies and link data analysis to departmental improvement and professional development.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

Individual must be competent in research and information gathering through technology. Must also have the capability to collect and sort data through technology. The ability to present and communicate through technology is required including spreadsheets power point and web-based information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels in the outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels in the outdoors and on the telephone; physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend stoop and sit for long periods of time; to climb stairs; to walk; to reach overhead; and to climb outside ladders onto roofs.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee necessary and appropriate to achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
