Job Description

Job Title: Mainframe COBOL

Location: Remote

Type: Contract role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design develop and maintain COBOL-based applications on IBM mainframe systems (z/OS).
  • Support and enhance core payor systems including claims adjudication enrollment billing and eligibility.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot complex batch and online processing issues.
  • Collaborate with business analysts and product owners to translate requirements into technical solutions.
  • Participate in modernization efforts including integration with APIs databases and cloud platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and CMS regulations in all system changes and data handling.
  • Document system changes workflows and technical specifications.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing and best practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science Information Systems or related field.
  • 5 years of experience in COBOL development on IBM mainframe environments.
  • Strong knowledge of JCL VSAM DB2 CICS and TSO/ISPF.
  • Experience in healthcare payor systems especially claims processing and eligibility workflows.
  • Familiarity with ANSI X12 EDI transactions (etc.).
  • Understanding of HIPAA compliance and healthcare data privacy standards.
  • Strong analytical debugging and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with modernization initiatives (e.g. wrapping COBOL logic in APIs migrating to cloud).
  • Exposure to FHIR HL7 or other modern interoperability standards.
  • Familiarity with DevOps tools and CI/CD pipelines for mainframe environments.
  • Experience with performance tuning and capacity planning on mainframe systems.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies and tools (e.g. Jira Confluence).
