POSITION TITLE: Teacher Adult Basic Education; Hourly Assignments
REPORTS TO: Director ofAlternative Education
SUMMARY:
To provide ABE/HSE instruction to adults through the Tahlequah Adult Learning Center (TALC) program including all potential program areas: High School Equivalency Instruction Family Literacy Corrections English Language Learners and English Language/Civics.
EDUCATION CERTIFICATES LICENCES and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors degree or Higher
Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate
Completed or able to complete training offered by Oklahoma Department of Career &Technology Education ODCTE

HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCEY (HSE)
ENGLISH as a SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
LIFE/WORK SKILLS
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Other duties may be assigned.
Ability to teach secondary level English Math Science Social Studies and Life Skills/Work
Skills for HSE preparation; all subject areas will be taught in a multilevel classroom.
Instruction offering limited English-speaking adults an opportunity to learn basic skills
necessary to communicate in English: speaking listening reading and writing in English
Ability to provide supervised Adult Basic Education High School Equivalency and Literacy
instruction at correctional facilities local correctional centers and community work
centers
Complete paperwork required by the ODCTE and Tahlequah Public Schools TPS
Attend professional development training required and offered by ODCTE and TPS
Development of an instructional plan for adults based on their educational goals and needs
Successful teaching strategies and appropriate accommodations for adults with learning
disabilities and other learning difficulties
Assessment of adults using the Test of Adult Basic Education TABE and/or the Basic
English Skills Test (BEST) or BEST Plus 2.0

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: other duties may be assigned
Demonstrate knowledge of Literacy and Family Literacy and how it relates to the adults
roles as worker parent and citizen
Demonstrate knowledge about differences between the child and the adult as learners
Use of research-based instructional strategies including how to use instructional practices
such as phonemic awareness systematic phonics fluency and reading comprehension in
teaching reading to adults and children
Ability to plan and engage early childhood and older children in literacy activities
Ability to plan and engage parents and children in literacy activities (Parent and Child
Time) PACT
Present parenting strategies to enhance skills and knowledge
Complete paperwork required by the ODCTE and Tahlequah Public Schools TPS
Attend professional development training required and offered by ODCTE and TPS
QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read analyze and interpret general business periodicals professional journals

Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations and

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest commissions
proportions percentages area circumference and volume
Ability to apply concepts of basic Algebra and Geometry
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide
with 10s and 100s
Ability to perform mathematical operations using units of American money weight
measurement volume and distance
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program
Skilled in oral and written communication
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule
forms
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Basic computer skills and ability to learn interactive technology usage
Selection and use of real-life contextual materials in the Adult Education program
Keep timely and accurate records
Maintain consistent and punctual attendance and reliability
Provide quality education instruction in an environment conducive to learning
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with students staff and the
school community.
Coordinate with other available support services and resources in the community such as
elementary and secondary schools postsecondary education institutions one-stop
centers job trainings and social services
Performs other duties assigned by supervisor or administrator
