Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Regional Radiation Safety Coordinator to join the Medical Imaging Quality & Safetyteam at Vancouver General Hospital. Apply today to join our team!


As a Regional Radiation Safety Coordinator with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Workin a team-based environment to provide strategic support for Medical Imaging Nuclear Medicine sites.
  • Promote a culture of radiation safety for staff and patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic Nuclear Medicine exams through the provision of site-level training and demonstrations for all MI and non-MI staff and contracted employees and through auditing applicable processes and providing feedback to Site Radiation Safety Officers (SRSO).
  • Support the implementation of the Regional Nuclear Medicine Radiation Safety Program at the site and corporate level to ensure the Nuclear Medicine department is compliant with all Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) Acts and Regulations as well as all applicable Provincial and Federal regulations (e.g. WorkSafe BC Transport Canada) licensing and organizational requirements.
  • Delegate as the Alternate Regional Radiation Safety Officer (A-RRSO) for Nuclear Medicine when the NM RRSO is unavailable.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Successful completion of a recognized Nuclear Medicine program.

  • Successful completion of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) certification exam in Nuclear Medicine. Certified as a Radiation Safety Officer from a recognized program plus five years recent related experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist inclusive of experience in handling and monitoring radioactive material and implementing managing and/or auditing a Radiation Safety Program or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.

  • Eligible for membership with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists.

  • Valid BC Drivers License as required. Travel will require the use of a personal vehicle.

This is a regional role. Travel is required. Home site is VGH.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Imaging theory and practice for Nuclear Medicine imaging radiopharmacy dispensing and radiation safety within a client and family centred care model.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CNSC regulations.
  • Broad knowledge of applicable CAMRT standards of practice and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Broad knowledge of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. Diagnostic Accreditation Program Standards.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Nuclear Medicine theory in the designated modality and practice within a client and family centred model of care.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply technical expertise and knowledge of applicable legislation and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with both provincial and federal regulations involving radiation hazards and safety.
  • Demonstrated ability in the application of radiation protection content expertise to recognize evaluate and control radiation hazards in the workplace and to minimize exposure and the development of illness/disease.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform nuclear medicine examinations in compliance with department standards.
  • Demonstrated skill in Nuclear Medicine techniques and the use of applicable equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and effectively deal with patients and their families coworkers physicians other health care staff and staff of external agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach demonstrate facilitate coach and mentor staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to use clinical practice documents organization policies procedures and standards of care including practice of safe work procedures with modality equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of research process and methodology and knowledge of new developments research and evidence based best practice in NM Radiation Safety.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of techniques for the development implementation and evaluation of training education and development programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as an effective leader motivator facilitator and team member. Demonstrated ability to develop procedure protocols and manuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop project plans and implement new projects. Demonstrated ability to deal with and/or guide others in resolution of conflict issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of PACS Radiology Information Systems and electronic health records (i.e. digital imaging image archiving and retrieval).
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and establish workload priorities in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability in CPR techniques.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths- based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per Ministry of Health policy all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
