Job Summary

Responsible for assisting optometrists and ophthalmologists in providing quality eye care services to patients by performing a range of administrative clinical and technical duties to ensure efficient operations and excellent patient experiences within the eye care department.

Essential Functions

-Greet and prepare patients for their eye examinations including documenting medical history medications and chief complaints.

-Conduct initial vision and eye health assessments such as visual acuity auto-refraction and non-contact tonometry to gather baseline information for the optometrist.

-Perform specialized tests under the direction of the optometrist such as visual field testing retinal imaging corneal topography and fundus photography.

-Assist patients with contact lens insertion removal and care instructions.

-Educate patients on proper contact lens hygiene.

-Ensure the cleanliness and proper functioning of diagnostic and examination equipment.

-Provide patients with information about eye conditions treatment plans and preventive measures as directed by the optometrist.

-Assist the optometrist during minor procedures such as foreign body removal or tonometry by handing instruments and offering patient comfort.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Proficiency in performing various eye-related tests and using diagnostic equipment.

• Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems is desirable.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with patients and colleagues.

• Strong customer service skills to provide a welcoming and compassionate environment for patients.

• Keen attention to detail when recording patient information performing tests and assisting with procedures.

• Willingness to work collaboratively in a team-based healthcare setting.
