The Safety Advisor plays a key role in supporting the planning implementation and monitoring of occupational health and safety initiatives across the District. Reporting to the District Safety and Health Manager this position works closely with school and district staff to promote a culture of safety ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC legislation and support safe and healthy learning and working environments for students and staff.
This role requires strong knowledge of occupational health and safety practices a collaborative approach asbestos knowledge and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Occupational Health and Safety Program Support
- Assist in the implementation communication and evaluation of the Districts Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Program.
- Conduct site visits to support school and district locations with inspections hazard identification and risk mitigation.
- Participate in and support incident investigations ensuring proper documentation follow-up and reporting.
- Monitor compliance with applicable OHS legislation regulations and district policies.
Training and Education - Deliver or coordinate safety training programs (e.g. WHMIS LOTO ergonomics PPE use violence prevention).
- Provide guidance and resources to school-based administrators and staff regarding safe work procedures.
- Support Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees (JOHSCs) through training mentorship and participation as required.
Workplace Safety and Claims Support - Support the documentation and reporting of workplace incidents and near misses.
- Assist with return-to-work coordination in collaboration with HR site supervisors and union representatives.
- Maintain confidential health and safety records in accordance with FOIPPA and WorkSafeBC requirements.
Communication and Collaboration - Works closely with the leadership team at Facilities and Maintenance to provide safety expertise and ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations.
- Act as a resource for staff administrators and JOHSCs regarding safety concerns and best practices.
- Promote awareness of health and safety responsibilities and procedures through effective communication.
- Collaborate with the District Safety and Health Manager on safety audits initiatives and continuous improvement strategies.
Documentation and Reporting - Maintain accurate records of inspections training incidents and safety committee meetings.
- Prepare reports on-site inspections safety observations and training delivered.
- Contribute to data collection and analysis related to safety metrics and trends.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Certificate or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
- Minimum of 23 years of experience in an occupational health and safety role preferably in a unionized public sector or educational setting.
- Experience in asbestos management programs holding a CSRP certification or having completed NIOSH asbestos training to support health and safety initiatives.
- Knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (OHSR).
- Valid Class 5 BC drivers license and access to reliable transportation.
- Enrollment in or completion of Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) certification or equivalent.
- Experience with incident investigation and workplace inspections.
- Experience supporting WorkSafeBC claims and modified work programs.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities - Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage and educate others.
- Sound judgment and discretion in managing confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to identify hazards and recommend practical effective controls.
- Demonstrated problem-solving organization and documentation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and health and safety tracking software.
Working Conditions: - Based out of the Facilities and Maintenance with regular travel to school and District sites.
- May occasionally require availability outside regular hours for emergencies or time-sensitive issues.
- Work involves both office-based tasks and physical site inspections (e.g. accessing mechanical rooms roof areas construction and renovation project zones).
Compensation & Benefits: - Competitive annual salary range: $78490 $98113 based on qualifications and experience.
- Full-time Continuing Exempt.
