Job Title: Operating Room (OR) Charge Nurse Multi-specialty
Department: Perioperative Services
Reports To: Nurse Manager

Job Summary:
The OR Charge Nurse is a key leadership role within the surgical team responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the operating room. This position ensures the delivery of safe efficient and high-quality patient care during surgical procedures. The Charge Nurse coordinates staffing manages surgical case flow facilitates communication among team members and serves as a clinical resource to support nursing and surgical staff. With specialized knowledge in surgery this nurse plays a critical role in maintaining a sterile environment ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and fostering a collaborative patient-centered atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Leadership & Supervision:

    • Oversee and coordinate the day-to-day workflow in the OR.

    • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing and support staff.

    • Ensure adequate staffing and skill mix to meet patient care needs.

    • Provide real-time problem-solving and support during surgical procedures.

  • Patient Care Coordination:

    • Ensure safe and efficient perioperative care for patients undergoing procedures (e.g. Spine GI Ortho Gynecology).

    • Monitor patients conditions and anticipate needs throughout the perioperative process.

    • Advocate for patient safety and comfort while upholding best practices in surgical care.

  • Surgical Case Management:

    • Collaborate with surgeons anesthesia providers and OR staff to manage and optimize daily surgical schedules.

    • Ensure proper instrumentation equipment and supplies are available and functioning prior to procedures.

    • Facilitate timely room turnover while maintaining high standards for infection prevention and control.

  • Quality and Compliance:

    • Uphold hospital policies Joint Commission standards and perioperative best practices.

    • Monitor documentation for accuracy and completeness.

    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives audits and staff education.

  • Communication & Collaboration:

    • Act as the primary point of contact between OR staff and leadership during assigned shifts.

    • Promote a culture of teamwork professionalism and continuous learning.

    • Assist in resolving conflicts and escalating concerns appropriately.

Qualifications:

  • Current RN license in good standing

  • BLS ACLS PALS certifications (required)

  • CNOR certification (preferred)

  • Minimum 3 years of OR experience

  • Prior leadership or charge nurse experience preferred

  • Strong communication organizational and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure and fast-paced environments
