Job Description

SUMMARY

The Recreation Supervisor is a mid-level leadership position responsible for planning supervising and executing a variety of year-round recreational programs. Reporting to the Superintendent of Recreation & Parks this position provides day-to-day leadership for staff and programs while operating under departmental policies and direction. The role requires excellent organizational skills sound judgment and the ability to manage confidential staff participant and financial information while delivering high-quality inclusive and community-driven services.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Recreation Supervisor under the direction of the Superintendent of Recreation & Parks:

  • Plans organizes and supervises year-round recreation programs events and activities for all ages.
  • Supervises department-hired recreation staff including hiring input training scheduling evaluations and corrective actions while maintaining discretion in all personnel matters.
  • Manages confidential participant issues including behavioral concerns scholarships and family communications with appropriate action planning and navigates difficult conversations with parents or caregivers when issues such as bullying safety or policy violations arise recommending removal from programs when necessary.
  • Responds to participant inquiries concerns and emergencies with professionalism and empathy escalating matters to the Superintendent when appropriate.
  • Coordinates seasonal strategy program evaluation and long-range planning making recommendations to the Superintendent
  • Develops and applies departmental standards for customer service safety registration and emergency preparedness.
  • Collaborates with the Parks Director to ensure facilities are safe and ready for programming.
  • Assists with budgeting grant management staff training and compliance reporting.
  • Tracks participation data prepares reports and recommends improvements to programs and operations.
  • Represents the department at community meetings and events and coordinates engagement initiatives such as surveys and advisory groups.
  • Promotes equity inclusion and accessibility across all programs and supports special events requiring evening weekend or holiday availability.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The Recreation Supervisor must meet the following qualifications:

  • Possession of a bachelors degree in Recreation Administration Leisure Studies or a related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in recreation leadership including staff supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in staff participant and financial matters.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing sensitive parent/participant issues including behavioral concerns policy enforcement and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated experience in program planning emergency response and community engagement.
  • Knowledge of industry standards in public recreation customer service and safety compliance.
  • Strong communication organizational and team leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and recreation management software.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally to support program setup or event logistics.
  • Ability to be on feet and active for extended periods during programs and seasonal events.
  • Possession of a valid Massachusetts drivers license or the ability to obtain one.
  • Successful completion of a CORI background check.
