Under general direction of the Superintendent incumbent services repairs and performs routine and complex maintenance of automotive and heavy equipment. Collects and presents information needed to maintain fleet. Maintains written records and logs on services parts and repair costs. Consults and collaborates on maintenance and repair problems with other mechanics and airfield personnel.

As part of our team youll diagnose repair and maintain a diverse range of specialized equipment and play a crucial role in maintaining JNUs light-duty and heavy equipment fleet. JNU Airfield Division staff work collaboratively as a high-functioning team with the shared goal of ensuring the operational safety of the airport for the community and the flying public.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position involves shift work that includes days nights weekends holidays and being on-call. Additionally this position requires recalls to the airport for emergencies and weather events. The office is located at the airfield maintenance facility.
Typical Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of this position is the servicing repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy equipment for the Juneau International Airport.
The successful applicant will:
- Remove replace clean and examine mechanical electrical pneumatic and hydraulic parts components and subassemblies.
- Perform diagnoses of mechanical electrical pneumatic and hydraulic failures and determines cause of unusual noises.
- Perform preventative maintenance including oil changes fluid level checks and lubrications according to manufacturers or Airports recommended schedule.
- Perform troubleshooting and diagnose variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Operate snow removal equipment and perform other duties as required.
- Additionally incumbents will establish and maintain work progress supply and time records advise on the ordering of needed parts and supplies and operate shop equipment in the manufacture and repair of needed parts.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in automotive construction/heavy equipment truck or transit bus repair and maintenance as appropriate to specific position.
Substitution: Post-secondary education or technical training in automotive work may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 125 clock hours ofinstruction for one month of experience up to a maximum of twenty-four months.
Other: Must provide and maintain own set of hand tools (Exception: Airport Position will be provided their own set of hand tools).
Airport Mechanic II requires a valid Class A Alaska Commercial Drivers License valid for vehicles equipped with air brakes and with a Tanker (N) endorsementand for continued employment.
SPECIAL NOTE:*Initial appointment to all FMCSA positions requiring a CDL will be made conditionally pending (1) receipt of verified negative results of pre-employment testing for controlled substances and (2) passing a 3-year drug & alcohol testing background check with previous DOT employers. Employees must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and provide CBJ with paper and electronic consent for a full query of the drivers Clearinghouse record. Employee will then be subject to the City and Boroughs drug-testing program. as an Airport Mechanic II is contingent upon passing a TSA-required security check per 49 CFR 1542 and 1544 and Airport Security Program. This will require an FBI fingerprint criminal history records check. Continued employment is contingent on ability to maintain a favorable security check.
