Oakland Public Works Academy Trainee program was created to provide job experience employability training and increase job acquisition competence for City of Oakland residents between 18-30 years old. The concurrent goals of the Public Works Academy Trainee program are to build local capacity in the areas of Park Attendant Office Assistant and Custodial and to generate a highly skilled workforce of youth and young adults with an interest in a career of public service as employees within the City of Oaklands Department of Public Works.

We are looking for someone who is:
  • Dependable and reliable with strong and consistent attendance. Showing up on time every day is very important for doing well in the training program and as an employee with the City of Oakland.
  • Adaptable and flexible able to adjust quickly to new tasks and changes. You will learn many different things in a short amount of time so being open to change and willing to take on different assignments will help you succeedboth in the program and as a future full-time employee.
  • Eager to grow and learn new skills especially if youre someone who takes initiative and wants to build a stable long-term career.
  • A strong communicator with personal responsibility able to talk and work well with your supervisor and coworkers while also taking ownership of the work you are assigned.
  • A team player who can also work independently able to help on group projects and stay focused when working on your own.
  • Organized and good at managing time able to handle many tasks set priorities and meet deadlines to keep your work on track.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Planting and maintainingground covers trees shrubs flowers and grass
  • Pruning and trimming shrubs hedges and trees; cutting and removing weeds; raking and clearing grounds; mowing and edging turf areas in parks and golf courses
  • Supporting skilled workers with tree trimming root pruning reshaping planting and removing trees
  • Sweeping raking and clearing grounds; removing stumps and tree hazards; cutting tree limbs and trunks into smaller pieces; splitting firewood; salvaging fallen trees
  • Preparing ball fields by leveling the infield watering to reduce dust and marking foul lines and batters boxes; checking the field home plate bases and pitchers mound for safety
  • Performing heavy physical work like digging and leveling dirt with hand tools
  • Weeding lawns and garden areas
  • Clearing drains and catch basins; picking up trash; cleaning walkways paths and tennis courts
  • Loadingand unloading soil and other materials; transporting trash to the dump
  • Driving loading and unloading vehicles

Minimum Requirements for Application


Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the eighth or twelfth grade depending on assignment.


Experience:

None required.


Desirable Qualifications:
Prior experience or training in gardening landscaping groundskeeping or related outdoor work.
Dependable and punctual able to communicate clearly able to work both alone and with a team organized flexible to handle different tasks willing to learn and careful about safety.

Disaster Service Workers

All employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employeesare required tocomplete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as orderedin the event ofan emergency.
