With a primary hub in Wellington and a presence throughout the country NZ Police ICT delivers new and enhanced solutions directly and through specialist vendor partnerships. We provide expert advice on how technology can be leveraged to support Polices strategies and turn concepts into reality through collaborative development.

We are currently seeking a Senior Developer to play a key role to design develop maintain and unit test the application software that drives the work of NZ Police.

Our Senior Developers work with business stakeholders alongside other teams in the wider ICT Group to ensure we deliver the right solutions at the right time. They will write clean efficient code utilising industry and NZ Police best practices and standards. This includes the delivery of appropriate design documentation.

The Senior Developers support the progress and improvement of the Development Practice at NZ Police. They provide support and guidance to other members of the team and wider ICT community. As our developers reside within the Centres of Expertise they will flow to work as required. This could mean working within a single product team for a long period of time or moving between products or projects.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Designs codes verifies tests documents and refactors complex programs/scripts and integration software services.
  • Applies agreed standards and tools to achieve well-engineered outcomes.
  • Adopts and adapts system design methods tools and techniques.
  • Contributes to development of system design policies standards and selection of architecture components.
  • Reviews verifies and improves own designs against specifications. Leads reviews of others designs.
  • Works with internal business customers to understand problems and design solutions.
  • Ensures that all requests for support are dealt with according to set standards and procedures.
  • Advises on application security licensing upgrades backups and disaster recovery needs.
  • Stays up to date with new and upcoming technology with the intent of improving development practices at NZ Police.

To be successful in this role you will require the following:

  • Have solid experience with programming languages such as Java and/or JavaScript.
  • Have solid understanding and experience with version control systems.
  • Proficiency in Agile methodologies.
  • Have solid understanding and experience with design patterns and software architecture.
  • Have the ability to mentor and support more junior members of the practice.
  • Be an effective communicator able to make complex technical concepts and ideas understandable.
  • Be able to problem solve with a good attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across the organisation and adapt to changing requirements.
