Job Summary

Department Overview

This unit provides Intermediate Level of Care to patients ages 0-18. Obstetric patients less than 18 with a new Hem/Onc/BMT diagnosis are case by case. Patients with specific pediatric oncology diagnosis may be followed until the age of 25 years. Presenting diagnosis may include leukemia brain tumors bone tumors sarcoma lymphomas blood diseases immunological diseases storage diseases Bone Marrow Transplants and Graft vs Host Disease patients. Nurses on this unit also provide support to Hem/Onc/BMT patients on other units to include but not limited to chemotherapy support expertise with BMT patients and central lines.

Function/Duties of Position

  • OHSU is the only hospital in Oregon that performs Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy (CAR-T) and Bone Marrow Transplants.
  • OHSU is a Magnet designated hospital.
  • The OHSU Nursing shared governance structure is designed to support nurses engagement decision making and service. As a result youll have the opportunity to participate in unit-based committees and councils that bring nurses from different areas together. You have a seat at the table to make impactful decisions.
  • OHSU nurses are represented by the Oregon Nurse Association union.
  • Attending providers are available 24x7 so you always have backup when you need it.
  • OHSU works collaboratively with other hospitals in the region as they refer patients for specialized care.

Required Qualifications

  • PALS APHON/ONS Chemotherapy
  • New grad must have had a practicum or capstone in inpatient pediatric setting
  • Associate or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)
  • BSN preferred
  • Associate Degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire.
  • Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email navigate information technology associated with the position and use Electronic Health Record information and tools
  • Current unencumbered Oregon RN license
  • Current BLS and PALS certifications issued by the American Heart Association
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Length of Orientation New Graduate Nurse

    • External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
    • Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Residency Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for about 10-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.

Length of Orientation Experienced Nurse

  • External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
  • Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
