Position Summary

Direct the maintenance and upkeep of all County road equipment three garages and all necessary tools and supplies.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Supervisory:

The maintenance and upkeep of all county road equipment assign work answer questions and advise staff as needed. On request supervise maintenance and upkeep of other county department equipment; on occasion coordinate the work of other road department employees. Address questions and/or concerns from staff suppliers and contractors as required

Hire train evaluate discipline and if necessary recommend the termination of subordinates

Hire contractors for building & equipment repairs

Instruct staff in operation of equipment and as needed train other departmental staff stressing safe operating techniques

Purchasing/Inventory:

Purchase all supplies soap towels tools etc. needed for day-to-day operations of repair depot

Purchase all parts required to maintain/repair county equipment (tires belts bolt etc.)

Control and maintain inventory in depots/yards

Maintain spare parts stock for emergency repairs to heavy equipment

Budget:

The Equipment Supervisor is accountable and/or control of a part of a departmental budget (i.e. capital budget for equipment).

Equipment Maintenance:

Assess condition of equipment; recommend equipment replacement to immediate supervisor. Review equipment tenders as well as update equipment specifications as required

Inspect new equipment purchases on delivery to ensure they meet County and legal specifications. Report/ recommend any major repairs or purchases required to repair depots to immediate supervisor

Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules

Regularly assess condition of equipment recommend replacement to immediate supervisor and review tenders for new and offers for used equipment

Arrange for installation of radio equipment in County vehicles and for maintenance and repairs to Roads Department on such equipment

Monitor and control fuel systems at each Depot

Ensure proper inspections are carried out on lifts and hoists in the garage

Licensing:

Operate a government licensed vehicle safety inspection station doing safety check inspections on all county vehicles that fall under commercial vehicle operators registration (CVOR) as well as affixing safety stickers when approved

Maintain and upgrade safety inspection equipment as required. Maintain vehicle maintenance reports under CVOR requirements

License County vehicles for maximum gross weight based on vehicle capacity & Ministry of Transportation weight standards

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Enter update and maintain all information for GEOTAB and use the program to full potential ensuring information is accurate and up-to-date

All DriveON requirements

Perform repairs on regular basis when short staffed or behind schedule

Ensure the depot is clean and orderly and make repairs when required

In emergencies operate equipment; be on call during winter months to provide emergency repairs during winter maintenance activities

Personally carry out more complex repairs

Direct upkeep and maintenance of garage facilities and all tools and equipment

Receive training and perform Winter Patrol Duties when necessary/requested

General:

Incumbents must keep up-to-date on all relevant legislation collective bargaining agreements County Policies and Procedures etc. ensuring that these are implemented as prescribed

Incumbents must possess the physical ability to meet the duties and responsibilities of the job description and/or the requirements identified within the positions Physical Demands Analysis

Incumbents must have computer and communication skills

Supervisory experience is an asset

Supervision Requirements

Direct Supervision: Licensed Mechanics (2 FTEs)

Indirect Supervision: None

Functional Authority: Provides direction consultative services and advice on employee/technical issues and services to County Roads equipment. The Equipment Supervisor is directly responsible for the supervision of Licensed Mechanics and is required to interact with 25 to 30 County Roads Department employees as well as dealing with suppliers.

Credentials Required

Minimum Formal Education

Secondary school graduation and Automotive Service Technician/Truck/Coach Technician certificate 3/OT (3/OS is considered an asset)

Small Engine Mechanic Certificate and Heavy Equipment Mechanic

A Valid Ontario Drivers License Class DZ (AZ is preferred)

A valid Ontario drivers license and use of a vehicle.
