The North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health (NCSLPH) Environmental Sciences laboratories offer comprehensive analysis of drinking water and other environmental samples through microbiological inorganic organic and radiochemical testing. The Environmental Sciences Section is regulated by various programs including EPA FDA and AIHA.

The primary duties of the Radiochemistry Laboratory Supervisor include the following:
  • Administratively and technically supervises the chemists and chemistry technicians involved in the analysis of air water and other matrices for a variety of radionuclides using sophisticated analytical instrumentation.
  • Assures that all personnel have demonstrated competency in the assigned procedures and that their work has met the required quality assurance criteria.
  • Reviews the analytical data and prepares the final report for distribution.
  • Assists with troubleshooting to improve analytical recoveries and enhance instrument performance
  • Works collaboratively with staff to implement new procedures.
  • Maintains competency in all radiochemistry methods to support bench testing as needed.
  • Conducts hiring completes performance reviews of all staff orders supplies and assists with the selection of new analytical instruments for this laboratory.
  • Serves as the Radiation Safety Officer for the NCSLPH keeping the Radioactive Materials License updated ensuring appropriate disposal of radioactive materials and responding to radioactive material spills in the laboratory.
  • Ensures laboratory services are available during emergency incidents/situations.

The State Laboratory of Public Health (SLPH) we provide medical and environmental laboratory services such as testing consultation and training to public and private health provider organizations responsible for the promotion protection and assurance of the health of North Carolina citizens. SLPH serves the entire state as a reference laboratory for difficult unusual or otherwise unavailable laboratory procedures and assist in the development evaluation and standardization of medical and environmental laboratory testing procedures. We provide training and consultation to improve and assure quality services in other laboratories and certify milk and water laboratories and milk analysts. Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and two years progressive chemistry laboratory experience;

An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
