Full time starting salary is normally in the range 47389 to 56535 with potential progression once in post to 63606

Grade: 8

Full Time Fixed Term contract up to October 2026

Department overview

The University has an exciting vision to build on the success of REF2021 by continuing to transform its research performance across outputs income impact and policy influence. Central to this ambition is the Research Strategy & Services Division (RSSD) a Professional Services department that works in partnership with academics across research strategy operations and partnerships. The RSSD integrates professional staff from the following teams into one cohesive ecosystem: Research Strategy & Development; Research Support (Grants & Contracts); Research Partnerships Research Impact & Innovation; Research Policy & Environment; Research Systems & Data; Research Governance; Research Communications; Legal & Regulatory Compliance; and Research Finance Accounting.

As part of its support for academic excellence and international collaboration the RSSD also plays a pivotal role in helping researchers access major funding opportunities including those from Horizon Europe following the UKs reassociation. This enhances the Universitys ability to secure high-impact research funding and drive forward global partnerships. An overview of the RSSD structure is provided in the organogram below.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Head of Research Operations (Medicine and Health) and working closely with the Research Strategy & Development Team in Medicine and Health (CMH) the Research Support Manager (RSM) leads a team of professional research support practitioners providingthe College of CMHwith a first-class research support service comprising proactive research development and partnership building through to support for research proposals submission to funders costing and pricing the due diligence of external partners and the negotiation of research agreements.

The RSM will deliver a portfolio of either research grants and/or contracts support and will lead a combined team of research practitioners that work across all aspects of pre-award research development.

The Research Support Manager will play a critical role in developing a strong relationship with Academics and Professional Services inthe College of CMH and with external funders and partners. They will form part of the broader leadership function of the RSSD and be trusted experts in their own defined area of expertise. Developing effective links to the other central Professional Services teams will also be key including particularly the Finance Office Development and Alumni Relations University of Birmingham Enterprise and Legal Services.

Developing staff in an inclusive environment that supports all colleagues to thrive is key to the RSSD culture and that of the wider University and the Research Support Manager will be provided the opportunity to develop their own team supporting colleagues to progress through the research support career path of the Division whilst also being supported to continually develop their own professional practice.

The Research Support Manager will be assisted by the RSSD Research System & Data Team to understand the volume and complexity of the demand placed on their team and to ensure that staff expertise is appropriately focused in close partnership with the Head of Research Support (Medicine and Health) the Assistant Directors (RSSD) and the College. They will ensure that the team receives the necessary training development and support to ensure both a high quality of service to academics their funders and partners whilst also providing a vibrant and positive working environment for all staff.
