The City & Borough of Juneau is looking to fill an Accountant position at either the I or II level!


Under the general supervision of the Accounting Manager and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) the incumbent will be responsible for a wide variety of professional level accounting and auditing functions. We are looking for someone to perform complex evaluation analysis and reporting of accounting activities on a monthly quarterly and annual basis. This Accountant will support departments throughout the year to ensure financial best practices policy law (federal state and CBJ) and principles are followed. They contribute to the audited annual finance statements including the ACFR (annual comprehensive financial report) and the single audit.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position generally works (Monday through Friday) 8am 4:30pm. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau.

Typical Responsibilities

As an Accountant in the CBJ Finance Controllers Division you will perform complex analysis reconciliations and journal entries for a variety of departments within the City. Primary responsibilities include monitoring revenue and expenditures regularly for accuracy and in comparison to budget for operations grants and capital projects as well as annual year-end analysis and adjusting entries. You will contribute to the development of the annual financial statements. As the primary contact for financial related questions you will support departments through their day-to-day financial transactions as needed. You will have the opportunity to work with CBJs independent auditors preparing work papers and answering questions.


Solid accounting skills are required as you will be reconciling accounts and transactions in various modules of the accounting system. Many tasks in this position are performed independently. However a strong team spirit and collaboration will be needed to fully succeed in supporting the accounting for the city hospital and school district.


As with most accounting jobs there is a busy season and some additional hours should be anticipated. The crunch time for CBJ Accountants is generally between mid-July and mid-November. It takes many hands and a bit of coordination to close out the fiscal year analyze and perform adjusting entries and close the books. Your participation and positive attitude during this time is essential to the successful deliverable of audited financial statements.

Minimum Qualifications

Accountant I (Range 16)-Starting Bi-Weekly wage $2523.00


Education: Associates degree in Finance Accounting or a related area of study.


Substitution: Any combination of experience and/or education (i.e. post-secondary related courses occupational endorsement/certificate) that provides the applicant the knowledge skills and abilities typically gained in an Associates Degree in Finance Accounting or related area. *Applicants must provide documentation with their application to support how they meet the substitution criteria.


Accountant II (Range 18) -Starting Bi-Weekly wage $2874.75


Education: Associates degree in Finance Accounting or a related area of study.


Substitution: Any combination of experience and/or education (ie. post-secondary related courses occupational endorsement/certificate) that provides the applicant the knowledge skills and abilities typically gained in an Associates Degree in Finance Accounting or related area. *Applicants must provide documentation with their application to support how they meet the substitution criteria.

AND:


Experience: One (1) year of professional level experience in accounting financial management auditing accounting system development or accounting system maintenance. This is equivalent to work performed by an Accountant I with the City & Borough of Juneau.OR


Two (2) years of expert technical work as an Accounting Technician III with the City & Borough of Juneau or the equivalent elsewhere.


Note: This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidates qualifications. If hired at the lower level the successful applicant will be promoted to the higher level upon meeting the minimum qualifications for the higher level completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work as determined by the supervisor.

Incumbents are required to progress through to the journey level. Failure to complete the probationary period and/or achieve the journey level will result in separation.
