Job Duties

The Community Schools Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring that families schools and community partners work together to support student success. This position focuses on aligning resources to directly benefit students and strengthen schools. By fostering partnerships with local businesses faith-based organizations and civic groups the specialist helps create sustainable community-driven solutions rather than top-down mandates. This role ensures taxpayer dollars are used efficiently builds trust between families and schools and reinforces the idea that strong schools are built through strong communities.


The Virginia Department of Education is seeking a qualified candidate to support the development of community schools throughout the Commonwealth by collaborating with the interagency task force administering state funds provided to school divisions to develop and sustain community school models assisting school leaders in the application for federal grant funds for their community school models providing technical assistance to school personnel and contracted coordinators regarding effective practices and models for community schools and publishing an annual report.

Minimum Qualifications

  • This position requires a professional who understands the design implementation and sustainability of comprehensive community school models that address the needs of students and their families.
  • Specifically the ideal applicant will have the following skills abilities or competencies:
    • Considerable knowledge of federal and state education regulations related to attendance special education family engagement student support services mental health school safety and child welfare.
    • Knowledge of comprehensive and integrated support systems and evidence-informed practices that address barriers to learning and re-engage disconnected students and families.
    • Understanding of the Virginia Community Schools Implementation Guide and multi-tiered systems of supports framework.
    • Ability to analyze complex problems use data to drive decision-making and communicate findings effectively to diverse audiences.
    • Knowledge of grant writing program administration and fiscal management.
    • Ability to use school and division data to address student wellness attendance discipline and safety issues.

Additional Considerations

  • Strong interpersonal collaboration planning and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet critical deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel PowerPoint and Word.
