We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Technical Engineer to lead the hydraulic design and planning of ATCOs natural gas systems. As Albertas largest integrated gas and electric utility ATCO has over 50000 km of natural gas transmission and distribution lines serving over 1.3 million customers including the provinces largest urban centers and key industrial regions making this role critical to ensure safe efficient and reliable energy delivery.
In this role incumbent will:
- Own the development of the transmission system hydraulic models including verification testing and alignment with best industry practices.
- Lead the planning and design of large-scale capital projects ensuring system prudency and alignment with internal and external standards.
- Complete preliminary cost estimates and develop early-stage economic models for project proposals.
- Collaborate closely with industry partners to maintain consistency in modelling and to optimize project design.
- Serve as a technical authority within the team providing guidance and mentorship to colleagues.
- Act as a subject matter expert and a Qualified Member with deep knowledge of hydraulic modelling and ATCOs transmission system complexities.
This is a strategic and technically demanding role ideal for someone with advanced expertise in gas hydraulics and a passion for shaping Albertas energy infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
Justification and Planning of Major Capital Projects:
- Drive large-scale transmission system upgrades to meet forecast supply demand needs.
- Oversee multi-year initiatives involving cross-functional engineering teams.
- Apply deep understanding of system complexities to align project phasing with customer requirements and system forecasts.
- Complete preliminary cost estimates and develop early-stage economic models to determine optimal project alternatives.
Hydraulic Model Development and Verification:
- Lead large-scale model improvements.
- Calibrate model parameters and provide clear documentation and justification for parameter selection.
- Integrate facility-specific knowledge into model design.
- Define and implement a robust model verification process to ensure accuracy of model builds.
- Test and validate model performance with software updates.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on industry modelling practices and system design standards.
- Stay current with industry best practices in hydraulic modeling and apply them to enhance model reliability and performance.
- Develop hydraulic models using non-traditional fluids such as CO2 natural gas-hydrogen blends and pure hydrogen.
Technical Authority and Guidance:
- Act as a Qualified Member authenticating personal projects and supporting peer reviews and validations.
- Provide technical guidance to individuals obtaining their Qualified Member status.
- Ensure authentication procedures are effective and robust for professional work products developed by team. Establish or refine processes to ensure technical and regulatory compliance.
- Lead the development of design guides and process documentation of the technical framework encompassing Transmission System Plannings professional work products and procedures.
Industry Collaboration & Regulatory Support:
- Design test and verify models and modelling assumptions against industry best practices.
- Ensure alignment in modelling theory and practical application with industry partners.
- Support and collaborate on the development of the Annual Analysis Study.
- Prepare business cases to be presented to the Alberta Utilities Commission for the justification of system changes and/or additions.
- Stay informed on industry developments to identify transmission growth trends and emerging opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineering (P. Eng. ) designation with APEGA is required.
- Master of Science or Engineering with a focus on Pipeline Engineering or Fluid Mechanics is considered an asset.
- 7 years of experience in gas hydraulic modelling system design or a related engineering field.
- Extensive expertise in hydraulic modelling and use of software such as Synergi Gas or similar.
- Proven experience leading and developing major capital projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets and make data-driven decisions.
- Ability to conduct independent research to solve technical problems.
- Working knowledge of industry best practices in hydraulic modelling natural gas fluid dynamics and transmission system design.
- Strong understanding of Albertas natural gas network.
- Experience in regulatory engagement and industry collaboration.
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
