DescriptionUnder general supervision performs building cleaning and facilities maintenance work. Performs other duties as assigned.
ResponsibilitiesEXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Selects appropriate equipment and supplies; sweeps and cleans floors in shops classrooms offices and corridors.
- Uses brooms brushes mops power operated scrubbing machines vacuum cleaners buffers shampooers wet vacuums liquid waxes & degreasers dust absorbers and other custodial supplies.
- Collects and disposes of trash scrap and garbage and recycles materials.
- Unloads school supplies delivers to proper storage area and positions on shelves or storage racks.
- Moves heavy furniture office and shop equipment and other items which might necessitate the lifting of heavy or bulky articles.
- Maintains lavatories in clean and sanitary condition. Sweeps mops and scrubs floors walls and partitions cleans and deodorizes washbasins and other lavatory facilities. Refills towel tissue soap containers etc.
- Washes and cleans windows light fixtures ventilators and other items and replaces light bulbs/tubes and filters which may necessitate climbing in excess of twenty-five (25) feet.
- Cleans and polishes desks chairs tables cabinets and other office or classroom equipment.
- Cleans shop areas remove grease and oil from equipment following preventive maintenance procedures when disposing of waste and scraps.
- Assists cafeteria personnel by cleaning mopping and waxing cafeteria floor by cleaning chairs and tables or by lifting cartons or sacks of food or cafeteria supplies.
- Participates in snow removal program by shoveling snow or spreading chemicals sweeping or as otherwise directed.
- Makes rounds of facility to check fire alarms boilers HVAC equipment doors and windows.
- Identifies situations in which emergency shut-off of electrical and mechanical equipment is required and shuts off equipment when appropriate. Reports emergencies to appropriate school and the Department of Facilities Management and Strategic Planning staff.
- OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Makes repairs to equipment and materials consistent with individual talents.
- Operates HVAC equipment under the direction of the Building Operations Supervisor.
- Performs other duties of similar scope and complexity as requested.
QualificationsEducation Training and Experience:
- High school diploma preferred. Experience in general cleaning preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of the methods materials and practices of custodial work.
- Basic knowledge of or ability to learn emergency facility response procedures.
- Ability to learn how to properly operate and maintain custodial care equipment.
- Ability to learn the proper method and use of approved cleaning supplies and chemicals.
- Ability to monitor building spaces to ensure a safe and secure environment.
- Ability to comprehend and follow instructions.
- Ability to effectively communicate with supervisor school staff and others.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Requires frequent intervals of considerable physical effort to lift and empty containers of trash move furniture and unload and load supplies. Requires frequent lifting carrying and pushing of heavy equipment and materials. Requires frequent bending stooping and crouching.
- Exercises care while operating power equipment to prevent injury to others; may be responsible for damage to cleaning equipment through improper use.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Retirement: Eligible for the Baltimore County Employees Retirement System.

Regular Rate: Grade 02 on the AFSCME Pay Scale $15.66 to $22.44 per hour
Substitute Rate: $15.50
