Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of Student Services the Licensed School Nurse is responsible for the planning coordination evaluation and implementation of the districts health care program and services. The Licensed School Nurse facilitates and promotes health and safety; intervenes with actual and potential health problems; performs health care assessments interventions and develops individual health care plans; administers medication; performs prescribed treatment; provides case management services; and collaborates with other professionals to address student health and needs.
Identify licenses/certification required:
Requires a valid drivers in the State of MN. Registered Nurse by the Board of Nursing and Licensed as a School Nurse by the MN Department of Education. Public Health Certificate. CPR/AED certification.
Essential Duties:
- Organizes and provides leadership in health care services provided to the school district. 40%
- Supervises and coordinates the activities of health paraprofessionals in each of the districts buildings.
- Plans recommends and implements health care procedures and health policies.
- Consults with the Director of Student Services for nursing assessments and judgments to see that staff and health offices and care being provided is safe and efficient.
- Oversees the administration of first aide the sending of ill children home or to physicians administering medications and oversight of AED and Hep B programs. Provides specific procedures and training to 1st aid providers health paraprofessionals on steps and procedures to follow when addressing health first aid or injury issues.
- Provides skilled nursing care treatments triage interventions health care assessments referral and follow-up as needed. Provides ongoing nursing assistance and management of health conditions in the school setting in such areas as diabetic asthma and seizure management. Administers instructs and/or delegates first aid emergency care.
- Formulates and implements individual health care plans for students with health care needs within the district. Communicates and trains appropriate personnel in student health needs and care. Attends IEP 504 SST SAT meetings to evaluate the plan of care for students with health care needs. Meets with parents 1:1 to plan and work with parents to keep the student safe and healthy. Serves as a liaison between the school and other agencies. 10%
- Trains and educates health staff teachers administration paraprofessionals kitchen workers bus drivers and parents in both general and specific information about disease syndromes illnesses injuries medications treatments or other medical information (e.g. blood borne pathogens nutrition safety procedures wellness hand washing etc.). Contributes to health instruction and health curriculum development. 10%
- Administers medications and the development of medication protocols. Implements medication management through collaboration and working with parents physicians to obtain proper authorization and to document health records. Oversees the proper storage and administration of medications by designed personnel in the district. 10%
- Obtains reviews records and coordinates the maintenance of all student health records files forms authorizations etc. 10%
- Plans organizes and participates in the conduct and follow-up of health screenings hearing and vision screenings; and scoliosis screenings. Conducts episodic screenings evaluations and follows ups as indicated. Sends referrals to parents informs teachers follow-up with compliance and documents results. 15%
- Reports illnesses to the Department of Health as mandated. Reports any suspected incidents of abuse/neglect to County Social Services or law enforcement. Makes referrals to parents for services such as mental health public health or community health providers as indicated. 5%
- Performs other duties of a comparable level or type as required.
- Provides professional expertise and assistance to individuals other district staff and the community concerning areas of instructional expertise/knowledge.
- Keeps abreast of changing developments trends and technologies within the field.
- Participates in staff development and professional development activities.
