Thank you for your interest in the post of Joiner with Historic Environment Scotland (HES) that will be based in St Anns Maltings Holyrood Edinburgh. This is a permanent and pensionable position.
You will be involved in planning and organising minor joinery repairs within the Edinburgh region. This could range from replacing slip sills to the repair and maintenance of sash and case windows.
Overview of the post and information about the team
The Monument Conservation Unit (MCU) consists of a team which carry out conservation and maintenance works on a variety of locations in the Edinburgh region. The team is headed by a Lead Craftsperson who has direct line management responsibilities for the whole team. As part of the Monument Conservation Unit you will have responsibility for the ongoing conservation maintenance and presentation of Historic Environment Scotland monuments. You will train and instruct apprentices in all aspects of the trade and provide information and instruction to support staff as required. You may also be asked to be involved in showing joinery skills at open days.
You will be expected to work at any location as directed by the Lead Craftsperson. Although the depots are situated in Edinburgh Castle and St Anns Workshops at Holyrood official transport is provided to and from the various sites within the Edinburgh region when required. Individuals are however expected to make their own way to the MCU Depot Holyrood. Please also note that this role will involve working outside in sometimes difficult weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities of this role
Construction of and repairs to sash and case windows doors furniture etc including removal and installation to a conservation standard.
Traditional building/repairs including skirting flooring and roofing.
Construction of external stairs for visitor access as well as other bespoke joinery requirements.
Promote traditional methods of conservation and joinery techniques to carry out challenging and diverse conservation projects/works.
Operate all wood workshop tools and machinery to the required level and standard.
Provide training and mentoring for apprentice joiners in traditional conservation skills.
Comply with and promote HES Health and Safety Policy.
From time to time you will be required to attend training courses identified to assist the work or to comply with health and safety legislation (this may require overnight stays away from home).
Key requirements of the role:

Essential:
You must be a time served tradesperson with joinery qualifications at SVQ Level 3 or SCQF Level 6.
Proven knowledge of the joinery trade and other traditional building crafts.
An understanding and knowledge of current conservation practices and techniques relating to historic buildings and monuments.
Good understanding and practical experience of the conservation presentation and repair of historic monuments and/or listed buildings.
Good all-round understanding and practical experience of conservation carpentry and joinery.
