SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

Under the general direction of the building administrator this position is responsible for all library collections and information resources. This position supports student learning staff instruction and curriculum implementation using library resources.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Organizes the library facility to provide for maximum accessibility for student-centered learning. Provides students regular opportunities for learning experiences using a variety of material from structured group projects to independent research connected to district curriculum.
  • Teaches students a process for information literacy which consists of selecting retrieving analyzing evaluating organizing documenting and using information from various formats to support implementation of district curriculum
  • Uses technology as a resource tool together with print and non-print materials.
  • Implements the District curriculum with students by collaborating with staff in the design implementation and assessment of instruction.
  • Works with teachers and teacher groups to provide opportunities to integrate information literacy and literature with the classroom curriculum and to develop long and short-range curriculum goals. Suggests a variety of ways to use library resources. Collaborates with teachers to improve student achievement. Evaluates student performance and progress in team-teaching projects.
  • Introduces students and staff to authors and literature appropriate to reading and grade level and promotes reading in content areas. Teaches strategies for selecting reading material.
  • Participates in appropriate building committees to promote learning opportunities and the importance of information literacy to student learning across the curriculum.
  • Develops in collaboration with teachers and others collection development processes that reflect the curriculum and the developmental cultural and learning needs of all students. Uses student learning data and professional review sources to inform purchases.
  • Manages an efficient circulation system for materials and equipment. Enforces policy for retrieving overdue materials from users. Develops a specific multi-year collection development plan. Investigates and collects materials from own school and District inter-library system. Informs staff and students on new materials and equipment.
  • Maintains the library collection by keeping it orderly current and in good repair. Arranges for computer and audiovisual distribution and repair. Implements procedures for ongoing inventory of resources. Researches and advises building administrator on equipment purchases and repairs. Generates orders for acquisition of materials.
  • Administers the library budget allotment and may investigate alternative funding sources.
  • May serve as the site technician in the building and represents the building at district technology meetings. Distributes information to staff regarding District technology curriculum upgrades classes etc. Trouble shoots technology problems and if necessary reports issues to the Districts technology help desk with follow-up checking. Promotes participation in the annual District technology fair and implementation of the schools technology plan. Conducts staff training on technology issues.
  • Administers the book competitions (i.e. Young Readers Choice Sasquatch Reading Award and the Washington Childrens Choice Picture Book Award). Coordinates book fairs author visits book talks and displays.
  • Coordinates with the science kit center to support science materials in elementary classrooms.
  • Communicates with the local public librarians about summer reading programs and projects students are working on in order for students to access resources during the summer.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in Education or related field.

Three (3) years of classroom teaching / librarian experience at a level appropriate to the assignment.

Experience using computers in the classroom and for data management.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Advanced knowledge of current classroom teaching techniques.

Ability to understand and integrate information literacy on all grade levels (i.e. research models specific skills etc.).

Knowledge of and ability to organize and run the library facility through understanding collection development (i.e. surplus criteria new selection etc.) the evaluation and citation process circulation systems flexible scheduling and curriculum needs.

Ability to unite the library program vision with the building goals.

Extensive knowledge of and background in literature and the ability to connect the literature to curriculum.

Knowledge of cataloging and the Dewey decimal system.

Knowledge of copyright practices for various types of materials (i.e. books videos web sources etc.).

Knowledge of current District curriculum methods and materials and the States Essential Learnings Grade Level Expectations and Frameworks.

Ability and willingness to learn and implement district and building initiatives.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to work cooperatively in a diverse environment with teachers administrators support employees parents students and outside agencies.

Ability to provide effective professional development to adult learners.

Ability to incorporate literacy instruction into other areas of instruction.

Knowledge of and ability to use computers in the classroom and for data management.

Desirable Qualifications (all may not apply)

Washington State Teaching Certificated with an endorsement in library / media specialist

Evidence of professional growth by attendance at workshops special classes and formal schooling related to the field.

Experience in literacy instruction and curriculum implementation.

Certification and Licenses

Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement(s).

Must have a valid Washington State drivers license use of personal vehicle and proof of insurance.

Completion of Criminal History Declaration form and fingerprinting.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a regular school building. May involve negotiating steps ramps uneven surfaces and going outdoors in all types of weather to reach some classrooms or other buildings. Tolerance of occasional loud noises; standard use of arms hands and fingers; and ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods of time are required. Prolonged exposure to video terminal display as well as exposure to normal office equipment and their chemicals such as copier fax machine telephone TV monitor etc. Requires sitting turning lifting objects using proper lifting techniques weighing 50 lbs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employment with Clover Park School District is conditional pending completion of a Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint background check as required by RCW28A.400.303. (NOTE: All associated background check fees are the employees responsibility.) The fingerprint scan must be completed prior to the first day of employment.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

These are supplemental retirement savings programs that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

*Clover Park School District total possible pay consists of base salary plus the following:

Building Centered Responsibility - 5 days

District Centered Responsibility - 2.5 days

Event Responsibility - 1 day

Attendance required for compensation of responsibility pay (building-centered district-centered and event).
