About the role


The VP Motor Underwriting leads and shapes the underwriting function for motor insurance overseeing corporate SME and individual portfolios. Reporting to the Chief Motor Officer the role drives strategic underwriting initiatives ensures risk alignment with business appetite and upholds regulatory and operational excellence. The VP provides high-level guidance evaluates complex cases improves pricing models and enhances underwriting frameworks to meet organisational objectives. With a strong focus on leadership compliance and market responsiveness this role also manages cross-functional collaboration and fosters broker and partner relationships to ensure profitable growth and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to developing underwriting pricing strategies aligned with broader corporate goals.
  • Translate strategic objectives into actionable operational plans for the underwriting function.
  • Support the companys vision through innovative market-aligned underwriting practices.
  • Direct underwriting activities across corporate SME and individual motor segments.
  • Ensure risk assessment and claim reviews meet defined risk appetite and standards.
  • Approve complex policies and quotations beyond standard authority limits.
  • Evaluate and improve underwriting guidelines procedures and policy conditions.
  • Monitor vendor relationships and ensure compliance with underwriting protocols.
  • Coordinate closely with the Claims department to ensure aligned processes and policy enforcement.
  • Build and manage relationships with brokers and agents to address issues and promote services.
  • Act as a liaison with external stakeholders ensuring regulatory alignment and service quality.
  • Lead the underwriting team to achieve departmental goals in line with business plans.
  • Identify training needs and develop capability in negotiation communication and deal closing.
  • Promote a culture of high performance accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee workforce planning to ensure optimal resource allocation and productivity.
  • Prepare the departments annual budget and align with corporate financial goals.
  • Monitor financial performance identify gaps and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure cost efficiency while maintaining service standards and operational excellence.
  • Design and enforce underwriting policies systems and procedures aligned with best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls regulatory requirements and risk frameworks.
  • Continuously review and update operational processes to enhance effectiveness.
  • Lead transformational initiatives to improve underwriting efficiency and competitiveness.
  • Benchmark against international standards to identify gaps and opportunities.
  • Drive change culture within the team by adopting new technologies and methodologies.
  • Ensure timely preparation of periodic and ad hoc reports on underwriting performance
  • Provide actionable insights to senior leadership based on portfolio and market trendsMaintain accurate KPI reporting for internal monitoring and external audit readiness.
  • Enforce compliance with cyber security policies and practices within the underwriting team.
  • Promote awareness of digital risk and data protection standards.
  • Support safe secure handling of sensitive customer and policyholder data

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Statistics Finance or Business Administration or any other relevant field.
  • Masters degree in Statistics Finance Actuarial science or Business Administration or any other relevant field or MBA preferred.
  • Ideally 14-16 years of related experience.
  • Fluent English
