Under direction the 2806 Disease Control Investigator researches individual cases and outbreaks of communicable and other diseases operating in the office and the field. Collects interprets and records complex specialized information of a highly confidential nature about patients and their contacts and investigates conditions at outbreak sites such as schools and health care facilities to formulate recommendations for disease prevention and control.
Essential Duties
- Schedules and conducts field and phone interviews with individuals diagnosed with communicable and other diseases and their contacts to identify infection sources and transmission patterns.
- Educates patients on disease prevention and reinfection to prevent transmission to others.
- Collects and reviews health information from medical providers clinics hospitals and patients to make follow-up recommendations based on local state and federal protocols.
- Makes inquiries in various public and private locations (e.g. homes bars public transit terminals workplaces and other locations) to gather information on contacts.
- Develops and implements investigative methods to gather information in the field.
- Implements psychological and interpersonal skills to manage sensitive situations with patients and their contacts.
- Uses medical terminology to discuss and explain diseases with professionals and the public.
- Admits patients and contacts to clinics initiates their medical records and instructs them on proper conduct.
- Schedules new appointments for delinquent cases and may issue isolation orders.
- Collaborates with probation departments parole officers school officials and others to locate contacts.
- Promotes the disease control program by appearing before organizations to discuss program measures.
- Maintains records of patients and contacts and reports findings from investigations using comparative data.
- Uses designated technology (including forms spreadsheets and databases) to track visits interviews and other case information.
- The Disease Control Investigator may perform other duties as assigned/required.
Qualifications :
Minimum Qualifications
1. Education: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
AND
2. Experience: Six (6) months of experience within the last five years conducting interviews or investigations in the field of epidemiology or as an investigator conducting field investigations dealing with the general public in a specialized public health or sanitation field in connection with disease control programs.
Substitution: Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of 2 years). Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be theRule of the list.
Eligible List/Score Report:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established so applicants can view the ranks final scores and number of eligible candidates.
