Position Description
The Harris County Public Defenders Office is seeking a highly organized and legally knowledgeable Jury Instruction Specialist to coordinate and manage the preparation formatting review and distribution of jury instructions in criminal trials. This position plays a vital role in ensuring our attorneys deliver precise timely and legally sound jury instructions that meet the standards of Texas criminal law.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Draft review and format jury instructions in collaboration with attorneys ensuring compliance with constitutional and statutory requirements and court preferences.
Coordinate the internal workflow for jury instruction preparation across multiple trial teams ensuring timelines are met and processes are standardized.
Maintain a centralized source of jury instructions case precedents and court-specific formatting requirements for reference and training.
Serve as the primary liaison between trial teams administrative assistants and paralegals related to jury instructions.
Coordinate and help implement the monitoring of legislative updates appellate decisions and procedural changes affecting jury instructions; and apply updates and recommend changes to internal templates.
Develop and maintain templates checklists and standardized formats for commonly used instructions.
Identify process improvements to streamline jury instruction workflows improve quality control and enhance case preparation efficiency.

Requirements
Education and Experience:
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
A comprehensive understanding of the Harris County Criminal Court System and the significance of jury charges in a trial.
Exceptional writing and critical thinking ability.
The ability to work with lawyers in high-pressure situations including the courtroom
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite Adobe Acrobat legal document management systems and related systems.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to handle urgent time-sensitive tasks and coordinate multiple deadlines across different teams.
