POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The position of Special Education Para Educator V is done for the purpose of supporting directly and indirectly the learning needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
The position works directly with students under the direction of the Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing or Educational Audiologist.
Provides audiology services and support in alignment with student.
Assists with conducting hearing screenings (may include training volunteers).
Delivers hearing related equipment devices to schools as needed.
Troubleshoot personal hearing devices and DM system devices (training will be provided).
Support audiologist with clerical tasks such as equipment inventory shipping/receiving of equipment.
Provides for the physical health and safety needs of students.
Provides social emotional behavioral and educational support for students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Provides direct academic functional vocational and specifically designed instruction under the supervision of the Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Serves as advocate and support of students who are deaf or hard of hearing in their least restrictive environment.
Supports students in accessing their education through varying linguistic means including but not limited to oral English written signing language or visuals.
Provides oral language and sign language support in alignment with student needs. This may include restating and/or rephrasing information using either oral written or sign language.
Is familiar with various modes of communication used by deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
Support the students vocabulary and grammar growth in both oral and signed languages.
Assists teachers with adapting and modifying materials to meet the language level/match the language used by students.
Facilitate communication between the student teachers and peers.
Understand how hearing aid Cochlear Implant and DM (Digitally Modulated)/FM (Frequency Modulated) technology works.
Perform daily listening checks and inspections of listening equipment.
Understand the impact of background noise on students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and be able to help mitigate it.
Be adept at using technology and willing to learn about new devices and applications.
Encourages and supports students self-advocacy and communication repair skills.
Encourages and fosters student independence in all settings.
Responds to student medical needs within the scope of the position.
Maintains records as required for the position.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Utilizes computers and technology as needed to adapt and modify materials to meet the needs of students and teachers.
Prepares instructional materials and other required documents for students with varying levels of hearing.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
Required:
High school graduation or equivalent.
And have at least one of the following:
ETS Paraeducator Assessment or
Have an Associate of Arts degree (original transcripts) or
Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an institution of higher
education (original transcripts) or
Have completed a registered apprenticeship program (certificate);
Foreign degrees accepted if evaluated by a NACES member company.
Preferred:
Previous experience working with the deaf and hard of hearing
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):
First AID/CPR certification required.
Required to complete specified courses related to the General Paraeducator Certificate as identified by OSPI

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting finger dexterity grasping talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts odors chemicals extreme temperatures inadequate lighting workspace restrictions and intense noises.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The location of the position may change during the school year. Positions may be full or part-time and will be filled as specific openings are identified. This position will require mandatory continuing professional education per state requirements.
AISP Paraprofessional pay schedule range5 $ 33.68/hour to $$35.63/hour (starting hourly rate $ 33.68/hour) based on negotiated collective bargaining agreement. Forty (40) hours per week for a 195-day annual assignment. Medical dental vision long-term disability and life-insurance eligibility is based upon 630 hours worked within a school year. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
