Job Summary

Department Overview

The Doernbecher Operating Room at OHSU is a high-acuity surgical environment dedicated to pediatric patients ranging from neonates to young adults. The unit consists of 10 operating rooms including a Hybrid OR for advanced image-guided interventions and an intra-operativeMRI (iMRI) suite that supports complex neurosurgeonprocedures and other specialized cases.


Surgical services span a wide range of pediatric specialties including general surgery orthopedics cardiac surgery neurosurgery urology ENT plastic surgery gynecology trauma and transplant. Patients present with varying levels of acuity from routine outpatient procedures to emergent life-threatening some cases patients up to 24 years of age may be treated with anesthesia and provider approval.


The multidisciplinary team includes Operating Room Registered Nurses Cardiac Cath Registered Nurses Certified Surgical Technologists Surgeons Anesthesiologists and Registered Radiology Technologists InterventionCardiologist Core Techs and support staff. Teams collaborate closely to ensure safe efficient and developmentally appropriate surgical care for every patient. The Hybrid OR one of the specialty rooms within the unit is used for cardiac catheterizingprocedures and other complex interventions that benefit from integrated surgical and imaging capabilities. The iMRI OR supports real-time intra-operative imaging particularly for neurosurgeryprocedures improving precision and outcomes.

The department operates Monday through Friday for scheduled urgent and emergent procedures. The unit is staffed 24/7. Additionally there are 3 dedicated on-call teams to provide after-hours surgical coverage seven days a week ensuring access to critical surgical interventions for pediatric patients across the region.


As part of a leading academic medical center Doernbechers Operating Room supports ongoing education clinical research and quality improvement initiatives. The team is committed to fostering a learning environment while delivering high-quality family-centered care.

Relief employees must be available to work at least four (4) days per pay period as determined according to the department needs

Function/Duties of Position

  • Assists physician during cases while operating a variety of complex radiologic imaging equipment including fluoroscopy and ultrasonography within the Cardiac Cath Lab suite. This includes circulating in the procedure room operating the imaging equipment in both adult and congenital procedures. Cross train to another service area (EP Hybrid OR etc).
  • Prep the patient and prepare supplies under sterile conditions for the procedure. Scrub in with the physician and assist in performing procedure. Ability to use fine motor skills with prepping supplies and equipment including but not limited to threading stents and balloons on wires.
  • Accurately obtains x-rays for the exams while being respectful to the patients abilities and safety issues.
  • Operates automatic injectors and selects the appropriate contrast agent for the patient and the exam under the direction of the physician.
  • In collaboration with other staff provides patient care during for equipment maintenance and use including but not limited to recognizing troubleshooting reporting and documenting equipment malfunctions along with coordinating borrowing equipment from other departments.
  • Work independently on-call with department physicians and nurse

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technologyprogram;
  • Registration with the American Registry of RadiologicTechnologists;
  • A valid Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist license issued by the Oregon Boardof MedicalImaging;
  • OHSU approved Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)certification;
  • Two years of experience in the operation of radiologic equipment or anequivalent combination of specialized training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Pediatrics experience preferred
  • Cardiac Interventional and/or Vascular Interventional certification from ASRT (RCES or RCIS preferred)
  • EP/Cath Lab technologist knowledge skills and abilities.

Additional Details

  • Must be able to deal with competing needs and priorities of internal and external customers including making correct judgments ensuring safe conditions for patients families and other personnel.
  • Use of all hospital approved clinical equipment. Significant use of computers copiers multi-line phones and fax.
  • Fast paced admit/recovery environment with often competing priorities and quick turn-over of patients.
  • Must have the ability to change work location based upon procedure volumes and staffing needs.
  • Assignment includes Cath Lab and EP procedures 4 procedure labs inpatient day patient outpatient workflows and two work sites (South Waterfront/CHH2 as well as the 11C unit of the Main OHSU Hospital).
  • Must live in a 30 minute call back radius to OHSU Marquam Hill campus for emergent/urgent afterhours on call activations.
