Job Description

Title:Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

Position Purpose:

The part time Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach is a 10 month academic year position working in the Department of Athletics. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of strength and conditioning programming providing significant contributions to the development of student-athletes through mentorship guidance community building and a commitment to social justice. This position is also responsible for the administration of policies related to strength and conditioning within varsity intercollegiate athletics adhering to guidelines from Bates College the NCAA and NESCAC.

Job Duties:

Essential Duties:

  • Assist the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach to design organize implement supervise and administer multi-faceted training protocols and modalities that are orthopedically safe and physiologically sound for student-athletes.
  • Collaborate with Head Coaches to build strength and condition programs that meet the needs of their teams and individual student-athletes.
  • Provide training necessary through skills strength and conditioning to enable students to compete safely and competitively.
  • Administer and evaluate performance tests and assessments in partnership with head coaches to track student athlete progress and determine effectiveness of training.
  • Assist in the management of the strength and conditioning facility including inventory and regular scheduled maintenance of equipment ensure cleanliness to prevent disease transmission.
  • Works closely with the Sports Medicine staff to ensure student-athlete safety.
  • Assist in the training management and oversight of student workers employed in the strength and conditioning facility.
  • Motivate students and staff to participate in an atmosphere of sportsmanship professionalism and respect among student athletes coaches and other intercollegiate athletic teams.
  • Serve as a caring empathetic and engaged advisor and mentor to students athletes having a knowledge of campus resources to refer student athletes when necessary.
  • Engage in professional development with an eye towards gaining new knowledge in the realm of current best practices successful coaching pedagogy training/skill development and risk management.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with scheduling and conduct strength and conditioning sessions adhering to governing bodies such as Bates College the NCAA and NESCAC.
  • Maintain familiarity with all rules and regulations required by governing bodies for compliance.
  • Attend all athletics department meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Current CPR AED and First Aid certification required.
  • National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength & Condition Specialist (CSCS) and/or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA) Strength and Conditioning
  • Coach Certified (SCCC) required. OR in the process of obtaining a required certification.

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of strength and conditioning coaching required and within an intercollegiate environment preferred.
  • Fundamental understanding of sport skills training and strategies for competition in a highly-competitive conference required.
  • Managing and maintaining a strength and conditioning facility.
  • Demonstrated success in supporting students from underrepresented groups including students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups first-generation-to-college students and low-income students.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (by car air train or bus) domestically and internationally as needed for competition.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion and serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse community.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships with clientele such as students staff faculty and co-workers.
  • Excellent communication (written verbal and listening) skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills for successful documentation planning and execution.
  • Proficiency in basic data management systems and basic data management systems and basic computer software (e.g. Microsoft Word and Excel Power Point WordPress (website) Google Docs email and calendaring)
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends evenings and other non-traditional schedules.
  • Personal commitment to excellence and the mission of a top-tier small liberal arts college.
