Scholarly Services Librarian

The DAngelo Law Library at the University of Chicago seeks a collaborative innovative and technologically savvy professional for the position of Scholarly Services Librarian to engage with and further the prolific scholarly endeavors of the University of Chicago Law School collaboration with DAngelo Law Library and Law School colleagues the Scholarly Services Librarian creates and implements a forward-thinking program to support the University of Chicago Law Schools scholarly outputs. The Scholarly Services Librarian develops and delivers DAngelos scholarly services for the University of Chicago Law Schools faculty and students including communication about trends and best practices in legal academic publishing generating reports of scholarly impact for Law School stakeholders providing guidance and assistance with scholarly profiles and staying abreast on the opportunities and challenges presented by technological innovations. The Scholarly Services Librarian coordinates the design delivery and assessment of DAngelos support for scholarship published in the Law Schools student-edited and faculty-edited journals and by the Law Schools research and academic centers. The Scholarly Services Librarian also creates and implements a program for Law School students engaging in academic research including joint degree students and students enrolled in the J.S.D. program.

To effectively provide these services the Scholarly Services Librarian will develop and maintain knowledge of current and emerging trends in legal academic scholarship and publishing including interdisciplinary and empirical research. The Scholarly Services Librarian participates in campus local and national discussions on scholarly publishing and research methodologies including with colleagues in the Universitys Center for Digital Scholarship the Law Schools academic and research centers and academic and law library professional communities.

As a member of the DAngelo reference team the Scholarly Services Librarian provides in-person and virtual reference assistance during scheduled shifts (including weekend virtual reference shifts on rotation). As part of the DAngelo Law Library User Services department the Scholarly Services Librarian provides high-level research and learning services to the Law School and University communities. Such services include training student researcher assistants and other researchers creating and maintaining guides and developing other resources for library users. Depending on the interests and experience of the individual other duties may be assigned.

The DAngelo Law Library contributes to the academic and scholarly success of the University of Chicago and Law School communities by providing rich collections and resources maintaining a premier scholarly environment and delivering superior library services. DAngelos collections are among the worlds finest for law research and enable comprehensive access to legal scholarship and interdisciplinary resources. DAngelo occupies five floors in the central tower of the Law Schools Laird Bell Quadrangle and is a valued partner in the Law Schools community of scholarship teaching and learning. The DAngelo Law Library is part of the University of Chicago Library system working cooperatively with other campus libraries to ensure rapid access to print and digital collections research and study spaces and expansive services. Responsibilites

Scholarly services

• In collaboration with DAngelo Law Library colleagues develop and implement a program to support the scholarly endeavors of the University of Chicago Law School community including generating reports of scholarly impact for Law School stakeholders and assisting with maintenance of scholarly profiles. Coordinate services for law students conducting scholarly research including joint degree students and students in the J.S.D. program.
• Coordinate the design delivery and assessment of the DAngelo Law Library services to support the dissemination of scholarship published in the student-edited and faculty-edited journals published through the Law School. Serve as a point of contact for University of Chicago Law School research centers including the Coase-Sandor Institute for Law and Economics Constitutional Law Institute Center on Law and Finance Malyi Center for the Study of Institutional and Legal Integrity the Center for Law Philosophy and Human Values the Becker Friedman Institute for Research in Economics and the Center for Comparative Constitutionalism.
• Develop and maintain knowledge of trends in legal scholarship and publishing including interdisciplinary research. Develop and maintain a basic knowledge of empirical research methodology employed in legal scholarship. Collaborate with colleagues at the University Law Library to support empirical research produced at the Law School including the Center for Digital Scholarship.
• Develop and maintain knowledge of innovations in technology as it relates to academic publishing and the research life cycle.

Reference services

• Participates in rotating schedule to provide in-person and virtual reference services;
• Participates in a rotating schedule to respond to virtual reference inquiries on the weekend;
• Completes faculty research requests as assigned;
• Creates research guides handouts tutorials and other research tools;
• Develops content for and helps maintain the Librarys web pages news social media and other communication tools;
• Provides training and orientations and collaborates on instruction and user support for students faculty staff and other researchers as part of the DAngelo Instruction program;
• Participate in the discovery of faculty publications for inclusion into faculty citations database;
• Develop and maintain knowledge of innovations in technology related to legal research methodology and reference services.

Other Duties Depending on the interests and experience of the individual other duties may be assigned.

Service Serves on DAngelo and Library-wide committees and task forces; participates in local regional and national professional and scholarly organizations; attends conferences workshops and classes to maintain knowledge of developments in law libraries law school education legal and scholarship publishing participates in and leads projects and initiatives.

Required:

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school (degree must be completed by the start date of employment).
• A graduate degree from an ALA-accredited library school (degree must be completed by the start date of employment).
• Experience using legal sources databases and research tools as evidenced by relevant coursework work experience or other related experience.
• Excellent communication organizational and planning skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with faculty students and staff.
• Evidence of initiative a strong user service philosophy the ability to maintain good relationships with colleagues and work in teams and a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.

Preferred:

• Previous experience working in an academic law library.
• Knowledge of data research tools statistical analysis software and empirical research methodologies in law or social science disciplines.
• Knowledge of current trends and emerging technologies and their impact on the production and dissemination of scholarship as evidenced by relevant course work work experience or other related experience. Examples include the impact of Generative AI on the research life cycle.
• Knowledge of current and emerging trends in legal scholarship and law publications publishing as evidenced by relevant course work work experience or other related experience.
• Teaching or training experience.
• Knowledge of one or more non-English languages
