Job Summary

The Pediatric Skin/Wound Nurse Clinician is a nursing leader who will function independently to provide care coordination for pediatric/neonatal skin and wound care. The Nurse Clinician will collaborate with leaders staff and patients/families to provide and support skin and wound care for inpatient and ambulatory patients across UI Stead Family Childrens Hospital. The role includes but is not limited to; modeling excellence in clinical practice related to skin and wound care mentoring staff providing education for healthcare staff and patients/families clinical problem solving and leading design and implementation of evidence-based quality improvement initiatives to improve the patient/family experience and to reduce patient harm through reduction in pressure injury and wound complication.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Model excellence in clinical expertise related to skin and wound care
  • Mentor staff and providers and serve as a clinical resource or consultant for staff faculty patients/families home health agencies and outlying hospitals in relation to skin wound and ostomy management/standards for the neonatal and pediatric patient population.
  • Effectively collaborate with the interprofessional health care team to meet patient skin care need in development and review of standards and in planning implementing and evaluating patient care for patients as it relates to skin and wound care.
  • Develop staff nurse experts related to skin wound and ostomy care and pressure injury prevention at the unit level.
  • Assist in the coordination of discharge planning and patient education related to wound ostomy and skin care.
  • Support clinical problem solving lead design and implementation of evidence-based quality improvement initiatives to improve skin wound and ostomy care for the pediatric patient and reduce patient harm through reduction in hospital-acquired pressure injuries.
  • Serves as a liaison between Department of Nursing and CWS wound and skin care-related issues and represents CWS on appropriately related committees.
  • Provide staff orientation education and in-services and assists with competency review for current and new staff
  • Participate in decision-making process for financial management and cost containment strategies.
  • Assume responsibility for review of new skin wound and ostomy care products; works with others to bring products to UICH for evaluation
  • Stay current and knowledgeable about neonatal and pediatric skin integrity professional standards of practice. Reviews related literature on an ongoing basis and makes recommendations for practice changes based on research and identified issues.
  • Submit reports and assists with divisional quality management projects and data collection. Utilizes data to identify performance improvement opportunities and successes.
  • Education to referring community hospitals home care vendors and nursing staff upon request
  • Participation in skin/wound/ostomy related professional organization at some level.

Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule:40 hours per week M-F 0800-1630 with flexibility as needed to meet responsibilities of the role and work-life balance no weekends holidays or call

Required Qualifications:

  • A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
  • Minimum of 1 year recent pediatric nursing experience

  • Evidence of strong clinical problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Previous involvement with patient and staff education
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional responsibilities and development including reliable work attendance and commitment to professional growth
  • Proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Excel Word and PowerPoint

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification in pediatrics and/or specialty
  • PRP (Department of Nursing Professional Recognition Program)
  • Demonstrated expertise with pediatric or neonatal skin and wound care and injury prevention
  • Demonstrated experience with quality improvement initiatives/evidence-based practice
  • Strong leadership skills evidenced by examples highlighting the candidates ability to identify and initiate change reliability commitment to teamwork and the ability to be self-directed.
