Job Description

Job Description
Histotechnologist (HT) Responsible for grossing tissue specimens accessioning them into the computer system embedding cutting staining and cover-slipping tissue. Also prepares special stains for tissue per request of pathologists.
  • Assists the pathologists in the cutting of surgical frozen sections and possibly autopsies. Processes specimens using equipment instruments or techniques to prepare them for specific analysis controls physical conditions responds to time factors to ensure that the physiological state-of-theart specimen is maintained.
  • May serve as the back-up morgue assistant in the absence of the contract diener. This includes basic assistance of the pathologist during autopsies to include but not limited to identification set up general assistance body closure and clean up.
All contracted staff:
  • As part of safety positively identifies patients prior to sample collection and samples prior to testing or aliquoting.
  • As part of safety and safeguards electronic and paper patient information.
  • Independently tests evaluates documents and reports patient testing and Quality Control (QC); identifies documents and resolves any collection processing testing or reporting issues.

  • Assures patient-centered care and provides service in a manner that is professional and will avoid complaints from all stakeholders and customers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Staff/Facility

Histotechnologist (1 FTE)

Minimum Education
(1) Successful completion of a full four-year course of study from an accredited college or university leading to a bachelors or higher degree that included a major study in an academic field related to health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of a histopathology technologist such as but not limited to clinical biology microbiology physiology pre-medical medical lab technology chemistry immunology physiology anatomy;
OR
(2) Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both);
OR
(3) Successful completion of two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in an academic field related to health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the position of histopathology technologist such as clinical biology microbiology physiology premedical medical lab technology chemistry immunology physiology anatomy.

Minimum Experience
Candidates Must have three (3) years of recent Histology and Cytology experience.

Certification.
(1) Candidates must currently possess the histotechnologist (HTL) certification given by the ASCP Board of Certification. The ASCP requires completion of one of the following for a candidate to be considered board eligible to take the certification exam:
(a) Successful completion of a histotechnician or histotechnology program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS);
OR
(b) One year of full time experience in all of the following: fixation embedding microtomy processing and staining in a histopathology (clinical veterinary industry or research) laboratory

VA HOURS OF OPERATION/SCHEDULING

VA Business Hours: The contractor may be required to provide services during the following times:

Dayshift
6:00AM-2:30PM
6:30AM-3:00PM
7:00AM-3:30PM
7:30AM -4:00PM
8:00AM-4:30PM

Evening Shift
2:00PM-10:30PM
2:30PM-11:00PM
3:00PM-11:30PM
3:30PM-12:00AM

The current requirement is for:
One (1) FTE Histotechnologist: 8:00AM 4:30PM
d. Shifts may vary to accommodate the dayshifts listed above based on the need of the
Laboratory.
e. The employee may also be required to work weekends holidays and overtime. However
on call or standby duties will NOT be required.
f. Contractors personnel shall be available and present during specified tour of duty hours at
their assigned VAMC which will be established and may be revised as deemed
appropriate for patient care by the Chief of Staff. Currently possible shifts are as defined
above.
  • Minimum Education:
    1. Bachelors degree in health sciences or allied sciences (e.g. clinical biology microbiology physiology medical lab technology chemistry immunology anatomy etc.); OR
    2. Bachelors degree with at least 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit in both); OR
    3. Masters degree (or equivalent graduate degree) in a related health/allied sciences field.
  • Minimum Experience:
    1. Three (3) years of recent histology and cytology experience
  • Certification:
    1. HTL certification (ASCP-BOC)
    2. Candidates must meet ASCP eligibility requirements via NAACLS-accredited program completion OR one year of full-time histopathology experience (fixation embedding microtomy processing staining).
