Foster Program Veterinary Technician
Overview of Job:
The foster program veterinary technician plays a crucial role in the successful placement of our animals in permanent homes by providing medical support to the animals involved in our foster program. This position will prioritize foster medical appointments assist the veterinarian during exams/treatment and provide updates and care instructions to foster volunteers. Additionally this individual will actively work to promote and support the LA/SPCAs programs and mission by educating our clients on the various resources and services that we offer.
Success Criteria & Essential Functions:
Detail oriented and focused on patient care the technician will be responsible for restraining animals for the veterinarian administering medications/vaccinations drawing blood and fecal samples for testing and monitoring patient progress during re-check appointments.
Proactively supports the foster placement team and shelter medical teams to ensure that daily goals are being met.
Communicate with foster volunteers on various aspects of animal care; explain dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; make follow-up calls to fosters.
Document medical symptoms and treatments in the animal management database as well as able to run reports to actively manage the medical care of animals in foster care.
Prioritize workload to ensure that all daily appointments and communications with foster volunteers are completed in a timely manner and with the highest quality of customer service.
Seek feedback from their peers supervisor and the medical team to improve their technical and customer service skills.
Possessing a valid Louisiana State drivers license the technician will periodically visit foster volunteers homes to perform rechecks and basic medical care for foster animals.
Focused on both human and animal safety the technician is responsible for helping to ensure that all shelter spaces and materials are regularly cleaned sanitized and stocked to provide the best possible patient care and work environment.
Maintain confidentiality regarding all cases.
Perform all other duties as needed and requested.
Reports into: Clinic Medical Manager or their designee
Daily Supervision by: Programs Supervisor
Compensation range: $16-$19.00 hr

This position is considered Essential in emergencies and/or weather events
Education and/or Experience:
RVT not required but preferred
Experience as a Veterinary Technician in a high pace veterinary clinic
Must have high school diploma or GED. Some college preferred.
Minimum Qualifications Skills and Knowledge:
Must be 24 years old with a driver record acceptable to the auto insurance company in order to transport self and foster animals when needed
Must have a valid state of Louisiana Drivers License
Physical Requirements:
Should not be allergic to animals; and must be able to work around all types of animals;
Must not be allergic to nuts or nut products.
Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; push and pull heavy objects; bend twist reach; perform strenuous physical activities including frequent walking and running standing for 8 hours bending and stooping
Working Conditions:
Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches.
Works in an area with a high noise level.
