THIS IS AN UNPAID VOLUNTEER POSITION.

The City of Fountain Valley is seeking a highly energetic and motivated individual to join our team as a Fire Prevention Volunteer. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented thrive in a fast-paced environment and have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. This volunteer opportunity will provide meaningful on-the-job experience and will help the candidate develop valuable transferable skills by working alongside professionals in the field. CLASS DEFINITION:
A Fire Prevention Volunteer performs a wide variety of technical and entry-level administrative tasks in support of the Fire Department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
The Fire Prevention Volunteer works under the supervision of the Fire Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Fire Secretary and Fire Prevention staff.

Job Overview

  • Assist with administrative tasks assigned by Fire Administration staff.
  • Observe fire inspections such as hazardous material and new construction inspections.
  • Provide administrative support work including answering inquiries from the public on the telephone and via e-mail.
  • Independently conduct surveys and research utilizing Internet searches City websites telephone calls and other means of collecting data and information.
  • Assist with reports summaries charts and presentations related to the research and analysis conducted.
  • Assist with disaster preparedness and public education programs.
  • Assist with special events.

Qualification Guidelines

EDUCATION:
Currently enrolled or have completed coursework in Fire Technology Fire Science Public or Business Administration or a related field from an accredited college or university.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Previous administrative Fire experience is highly desirable.
LICENSE REQUIRED:
  • Valid California Class C Drivers License.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • Must be willing to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours per week.
  • Must live within 30 miles of the City.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Fire Prevention 1A and 1B.
  • Fire Tech core classes.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Modern office methods practices and procedures.
  • Correct English usage including spelling grammar and punctuation.
  • Computer programs including Microsoft Word Excel PowerPoint Outlook and website design.

REQUISITE ABILITIES:
  • Operate standard modern office equipment and machines.
  • Follow safety rules and regulations.
  • Operate a computer and software including Word Excel Power Point and Outlook.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Learn understand and follow department rules policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees City officials and the public.

PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed in an office environment requiring prolonged sitting or standing; walking kneeling crouching squatting stooping and bending; input data into a computer terminal; exposure to computer glare vibrations and pitch; ability to lift carry and move objects totaling approximately 25 pounds in weight; and have mobility vision hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
