Orange Coast Colleges 164-acre campus is located in Costa Mesa just minutes from Southern Californias beautiful beaches with its main campus in Costa Mesa and a campus in Newport Beach (Waterfront Campus). Orange Coast Colleges Waterfront Campus located five miles south of the main campus in Newport Beach is a premier maritime education and training site. This unique location combines a state-of-the-art maritime training facility with a working waterfront that supports a diverse fleet of vessels ranging from 12 to 96 feet. The campus is home to the School of Sailing and Seamanship one of the largest and most respected community boating programs in the nation as well as the Professional Mariner Training Center which serves as the hub for academic professional and workforce-oriented maritime education.
The Waterfront Campus also serves as the training base for Orange Coast Colleges nationally recognized intercollegiate Crew teams while continuing to offer a wide range of contract and fee-based classes for recreational boaters and maritime professionals alike.
At the Professional Mariner Training Center students pursue two primary educational pathways:
Professional Mariner Program (OCC Credit Program):
An accredited certificate and associate degree program designed for individuals seeking careers in the maritime industry. Coursework covers seamanship navigation safety vessel operations and regulatory compliance preparing graduates to succeed in an evolving global industry.
Mariner Continuing Education (Workforce & Community Education):
For working mariners industry professionals and recreational boaters the center offers U.S. Coast Guardapproved training courses and specialized programs that support credential upgrades license renewals safe boating practices and skill advancement. These short-term targeted offerings are tailored to meet both workforce development priorities and the needs of the broader boating community.
In addition to supporting individual students the center partners with local and regional employers to provide customized training that aligns with industry demands reinforcing its role as a vital link between Orange Countys educational resources and the maritime economy.
The mission of the Waterfront Campus is rooted in the identity of the coastal region where the sea plays a central role in culture and community life. It provides opportunities for students from Orange County and beyond to connect with maritime resources develop seamanship skills and pursue both recreational and professional pathways on the water. The campus is dedicated to cultivating a dynamic learning environment that inspires individuals at all levels from beginners discovering the fundamentals of safe boating to professional mariners advancing their credentials and careers.
