Systems Engineering Technologist
Position Summary
The Systems Engineering Technologist is responsible for supporting Systems Engineering in the development of Thales projects. These projects are largely defined as communication and control systems encompassing RF digital network and analog sub systems.
The Systems Engineering Technologist will ensure project work is executed monitored and controlled in terms of adherence to budget and schedule risk management and quality of deliveries. As required the candidate will participate in all phases of engineering projects throughout the lifecycle including: sub-system design integration/configuration troubleshooting verification and validation as well as lessons learned and engineering close-out activities.
The environments the candidate will participate in vary from the Lab to customer premises that may include active construction sites Ships or other vessels both Military and Civilian.
Tasks are assigned by the Technologist Group Lead or as delegated to the project authority.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Ensure all work is carried-out in accordance with company practices and procedures; Ensure all work is completed according to Projects integrated master schedule
- Maintain control of integration tools and test equipment and lab area; Manage equipment to make sure they are calibrated and functional ready to be used; Maintain the supply of Material for the group including liaising with Services for the procurement of equipment and supplies.
- Assist in preparation of drawings (electrical and mechanical) as required; Support the creation of technical data packages for installation integration troubleshooting and other manuals
- Read engineering documents schematics and technical orders to determine faults and methods of troubleshooting.
- Integrate COTS and original design modules in a multi-disciplinary environment according to a system design; Implement and execute system test cases. Analyze and evaluate test results; Troubleshoot systems that do not meet requirements.
- Identify installation risks and prepare mitigation strategies; Provide inputs to the lab manager for Test Tool equipment budget for the integration lab; Support the Systems Engineering group with the assembly integration set-to-work and test of systems for contracts or products in the military / civilian markets for domestic / international clients; Inspect parts for defects.
- Mentor and support Junior Technicians; Has a level of independence and leadership; Interact with customer technical and non-technical personnel (military and/or civilian).; Work in a team environment and independently; Participate in site preparation installation and troubleshooting. Assemble test platforms and perform test plans.
- May require occasional travel within Canada and possibly overseas
Minimum Requirements
- College diploma in a Technical Program with relevant experience.
- Min 5 years experience in a systems engineering environment ideally in the defence industry
- High level oral and written communication skills required for report writing and design justification documentation
- Can read and understand electrical mechanical drawings and technical document
- Hands on experience on building troubleshooting integration and configuration and testing cabling network & electronics systems
- Experience in the use of common electrical test equipment
- Experience in the use of common hand and electrical tools
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in electronics systems RF networking systems is an asset
- It would be an asset to have knowledge of Canadian requirements for shock and vibration EMC/EMI drawing standards and industry design standards. These skills are expected to be developed;
- Experience with varied operating systems and technical software such as Labview
- Drafting Experience in the Systems Engineering life cycle including typical modeling tools for design such as Solidworks Electrical AutoCAD;
Physical Demands
- Onsite work: 80% installation STW HAT SAT Configuration inspections in lab or in the field
Special Position Requirements
- Schedule: 40 hrs/week. Overtime may be necessary depends on the demand and project schedule
- Physical Environment: Shipyard On the vessel or submarine land based test site or Lab
- Travel:>25% of time
